I am having trouble sleeping and have been for a long time. I got a watch on Thursday which records sleep along with heart beat, blood pressure etc. In six days I have had four nights with around 3 hours sleep and two nights around 6 hours. It has started to get me down and last night I cried in bed with frustration. I am thinking of trying one of the herbal medicines as mentioned above, has anyone taken them whilst on an anticoagulant. Also I go into AF around three times a year and a bit worried it might also affect my heart beat. Anyone else have sleep problems and how did you solve them? Kind regards, Heather

Bad sleeps are horrible!!!!!! I have slept badly since heart surgery in 2001, don’t know if it was the trauma or the drugs. But sleeplessness and unbelievable dreams are the norm. I tried those 2 remedies and they did not help but it is worth a try for you .Good luck.
Heather, I don't mean to sound flippant but is there anyone you can give the watch to for Christmas. These gizmo's can be useful of course, but telling you something you know every morning is hardly like to encourage you to sleep. As far as Kalms and Nytol are concerned, suggest you ask your pharmacist first and if your not happy, double check with your GP. Try avoiding PC's and tablets at least an hour before going to bed and try camomile tea during the evening, get a clock radio with a snooze function and drift off to some soothing music.....
I actually got the watch to track how many steps I did, maybe I should just stop looking at the sleep bit of it!! Thanks for other suggestions I will happily try anything, Heather

As far as I know but if anyone is not sure due to their medication, then check with a pharmacist or doctor.
For sleep, I have used two over the counter products. One, Kavinace, made by Neuroscience. It contains B6 & Taurine. It can leave you groggy if you take it too close to waking up.
But, lately am taking a natural & gentler product. Melatonin by Natrol. I am taking the one called “Advanced Sleep”. Two 10 mg tablets 1/2 hour before retiring. Contains B6, Calcium, & Melatonin. There is a milder version with less Melatonin. The Melatonin usually leaves no groggy aftereffects, but, also, should not be taken too close to getting up to avoid any amount of grogginess. You might start with the 5 mg version, and if that isn’t quite enough, try the 10 mg version.

Ambian 10 mg seems to work well for falling asleep. It requires a prescription from your doc.
I too use the radio as a means to drift off. I also have various relaxation mp4s recorded which I find helpful. I think routine is important too. Try to retire at the same time with maybe a warm shower or bath and yes, keep off the tablet and phone. If I wake I keep my eyes closed and sometimes plan the decoration of the house I would like to own. Another suggestion I have never tried is to get up and embark on a boring task you have been putting off!
I had insomnia for months after my stroke and I tried a Kalms equivalent and the GP gave me sleeping tablets and they made me really tearful and so I stopped taking them. I bought a paperback: the effortless sleep method, which is rather repetitive but has great suggestions that work such as going to bed an hour later; so that you only go to bed when you are really, really tired, adding on an extra hour each night so that you are up an extra 3 hours if necessary. I only needed to stay up an extra hour. Definitely try getting more exercise. Also, tell yourself that if you can’t sleep then it’s OK! Try going to the bathroom, or having a caffeine free drink. Most importantly breathe in and out VERY slowly, and do not fidget! Relax your limbs. It worked for me. I often use the deep breathing method when my mind is too active. I really sympathize with you and I hope it’ll work for you too.
Thanks for reply, last week I walked on three days for 3 miles each day, it didn’t make any difference. My usual pattern is around 3 hours sleep for 2 - 3 nights, then sleep for around 6 hours on 4th night. I will certainly try your other suggestions, Heather
I have insomnia too, you have all my sympathy. I think some of the ingredients in Nytol don't interact well with warfarin, but what does? I'm at the stage of asking a pharmacist too, probably the best person to help. If yours gives you any good ideas, let us know...
That watch would give me so much anxiety I wouldn't be able to sleep. Maybe not wearing it to bed would be better. I use a sound machine alarm clock and fall asleep to rain or ocean waves. Very calming!
I take Valerian on the odd occasions I cannot sleep which I think is what is in the Kalms but it hasn't been sanctioned by a doctor. It does not send me into AF and nor does it bring me out. It does make me feel more washed out the following day because of all the other drugs like Apixaban, bisoprolol and flecainide. I miss the freedom to take the drugs you need for various ailments. It all has to be checked against the heart drugs now.
I had 2 different Fit Bit Watches. One consistantly said I got 6 hrs out of 8 in bed and the other 4.
I don't wear them to bed anymore. I think for me it only made things worse like a self fulfilling prophesy. There is nothing more useless than not being able to get to sleep because you are worring about not getting to sleep.

Thank you jwsonoma, yes you are right I have given up wearing it in bed. I was given it as a present so will wear it when out walking. As someone else said I know how much sleep I get, last night around 5 hours, tried out breathing exercises which was recommended, Heather
