Natural anti inflammatory?

Calamity Dawn has struck again! Managed to tear the ligaments in my ankle 13 days ago, still very sore, hobbling about and very swollen by evening.I am trying to rest it as much as possible and have got a support crepey bandage on it.Obviously cannot take ibuprofen and am nervous of any painkillers apart from paracetamol.

Any advice gratefully received!

Hop? ;)

Sounds like you're already doing RICE (Rest Ice Compression Elevation), though I'd still persist with the frozen peas 20 mins on / 40 mins off. I'd also try to flex it gently (toes pointing down, pulling toes towards you) periodically otherwise you'll be stiff as anything and it'll hurt more.

Ok Jedi, will.do that! I'm on a coach trip today to a nearby town(Coventry) for a big commemorative concert for WW1.Shall wiggle and stretch as much as I can,got a stick too. It's not far away and only an hour in there!thank you mate

I don’t have any advice but I’m so sorry you’re in pain. I hope you have a speedy recovery. Why no ibuprofen? I didn’t know we can’t take that. I’m allergic to most all pain meds such as Percocet etc.

Hi

Thank you. Ibuprofen is a no no,triggers AF for many of us. So little advice is given to us by GPS etc.I only found out by taking one by mistake when I broke my toe!😀😀

Oh my gosh. I had never heard that but I’ll be sure to remember. I have taken it but can’t say I had any event with it. There’s always acetaminophen (Tylenol) but that usually does nothing for me.

Plus the fact it can increase the risk of a GI (gastro-intestinal) bleed which is why if you're on it long term you should have something like Omeprazole to help with the digestion and reduce reflux/acid production in the stomach and therefore damage/bleed.

From an AF point of view I'm fine with Naproxen, but from a bleed point of view Ibuprofen Diclofenac and so on aren't recommended for those on anticoagulants.

Thank you. That makes a lot of sense. I’ll be staying away from ibuprofen.

If you take NSAIDs whilst on anticoagulants you double your chance of a major bleed

I know the feeling. I am definitely a calamity and did what you have done a few years ago. You need magnesium flakes used as a foot bath and soak the ankle for twenty minutes. In between rub on arnica cream from any health shop or even Boots. The bandage may not be helping as my husband did this with a possible fracture last summer and the hospital told him not to bandage it, as thinking has changed on bandaging. Use the magnesium as many times as you can and I also sprayed on magnesium oil in between the soak and the arnica. Honestly I just gave it everything I could think of and I was back to regular morning walks in three days. Ice pack might also be useful. Hope this helps.

Oh thank you for that! I'll rethink the bandage idea then...I will get some flakes and arnica picked up. Xx

Poor you - what a misery! My GP told me to use Ibuprofen gel for a short time after I pulled my knee. Although I take Apixaban, he said not enough of the rub gets absorbed to be significant. Check that your doc agrees and will prescribe it for you.

R.I.C.E. - as jedi says does help with pain and swelling and although it isn’t the best idea, I also took painkillers when I thought I had to - perhaps for your outing.

Time is your friend here - frustrating but true!! Best wishes with it and hope the trip goes well.

Hi WD :-) I have hurt my knee ,a torn Meniscus I think which I have had before in the other knee.

The pain is awful and keeps me awake. I checked with the doctor and can take codeine and paracetamol but they don't help much.

I have to walk my dog so drag my knee around hoping I don't fall in the field and get stuck there or have to crawl home because I couldn't get up .

Things that help, a cushion in bed at the right angle to support my knee , but mainly ice and elevation. I wear an elasticated support too when it isn't too swollen.

I bought a wonderful ice pack on Amazon ....

better than any peas and use that 2 or 3 times a day .

I hope you are better soon.

Hi WD :-) I am glad you were able to get out and enjoy your outing . We take walking for granted don't we until we hurt a limb then life can be really difficult.

Ouch. I feel your pain. I injured my ankle 3 1/2 years ago (pre AF) and nine months later the tendon came away from the bone so I ended up having ankle reconstruction surgery, then spent 3 months in a wheelchair. The surgery triggered my heart rhythm problems and it’s been all downhill since then🤪🤪. So whilst I don’t have any useful advice I’m sending you best wishes and a big hug x

Ooh ah! That sounds awful, and what repercussions. I'll take gentle steps.

Managed my theatre trip today on sticks,WW1 tribute, had us in tears, poppies dropped at the end......it was very good . Hope you are holding up there Kaz xx

My ankle is pretty good now although it has reduced movement. One I get my heart sorted I’ll be right. Take care on the crutches, they can be tricky things x

I'm with Hennerton. Arnica and magnesium oil is very good and helps a lot. Also consider DMSO as it has anti-inflammation action. Many say swelling reduced within 15-30m of application. We use it here at home.
