Mixing Aspirin With Rivaroxaban

My Cardiologist told me I must never ever take an aspirin now that I am on Rivaroxaban -- unless I am having an actual heart attack and the ambulance is already on the way ... his exact words. But new studies are coming out about aspirin being used in conjunction with Rivaroxaban to better help prevent strokes in people with CAD or PAD. Here are a couple articles about it, and you can find a lot more by Googling "rivaroxaban plus aspirin for PAD". medscape.com/viewarticle/90... , jvascsurg.org/article/S0741... . I have to say that I felt better in every way when I was taking aspirin for my arthritis, but they made me stop taking it when I started on the Rivaroxaban (Xarelto). From these articles, it seems like it is safe if you keep a close eye out for any stomach problems, etc. I always made sure I had food in my stomach when I took aspirin before, and I was taking a lot to help with my arthritis. But I never had any stomach problems, I believe because I only took it with food, never alone. Has anybody spoken to their Cardiologists about this?

Although it doesn’t apply to me directly, I found this interesting. It doesn’t seem many years since aspirin was the blood thinning gold standard for all kinds of heart disease. I wonder whether they will revise their advice about over the counter medicines containing aspirin?

Aspirin is an anti platelet not an anticouagulant so useful if you have stents or articifical valves. NICE do not recommend aspirin for AF for a very good reason but it is often used in other circumstances.

Yes and he told me to continue taking aspirin with my warfarin because I have asymptomatic coronary artery disease. I had taken this combination for years without problems. My new GP, reading from her computer monitor, said I would have to take Omeprazole permanently, to prevent a GI bleed, if I wanted to take this combination of warfarin.and aspirin, so I am not on aspirin now.

I think the key thing is that the antiplatelet dose of aspirin is 75mgs daily (UK). Aspirin for arthritis was typically up to 4000mgs daily 40 years ago.
