beta blockers and mind

hello all me again, anyone on who takes bisoprolol that has regular bouts of crying or feeling low, I’m going through a lot in life so it could be that but the chemist changed the batch to a different brand and ever since I’ve put on weight ,keep crying and regularly feel low. I’ve asked for different batch but they always say they get what they get. Does anyone know if I change to different BB if that would help or should I try calcium channel blockers and if so what problems do they bring. It all feels so endless , any advice I would be grateful for .

I’ve been on Bisoprolol for over 4 years, not caused any of the problems you are suffering with. I was changed to a calcium channel blocker once and it was horrible, I took it for a few days and went back to Bisoprolol.

We are all different so what suits one won’t necessarily suit another so it’s trial and error to find what works for you.

As long as your doctor is on board, experimenting with different drugs that have the same function -- such as the calcium channel blocker diltiazem instead of bisoprolol -- makes sense when you think the current drug is giving you side effects.

Too many people suffer needlessly with a decreased quality of life , when alternative drugs with less side effects are often available.

We all react differently to these drugs, but beta blockers are known to have varying side effects for many.

Thank you, it might be what’s going on in my life at the moment then. I do get very forgetful on it though.

Might be worth talking to your pharmacist to obtain a different brand, albeit the same drug. They may even be able to offer a practical suggestion for alternative meds that you could go back to your GP with. Worth a try.....

Yes I did speak to pharmacist but they say they only have what comes in. I have been on beta blockers for years with no problems and it’s just changed .

Beta blockers seem to be the first choice, rather than Ca++ agonists. My specialist much prefers them for AF. Nebivolol seems an alternative in the UK, or metoprolol.

I have never heard of such a reaction but there are beta receptors in may organs, including the brain and different people react individually at times to these drugs. I would ask to switch to nebivolol as it works somewhat differently from bisoprolol.

Weight gain is an accepted side effect of beta blockers but in studies it has to been no more than a few pounds. It's possible that you are increasing your calories also for other reasons associated with the drug or the condition. When I went up to 2.5mg daily, I seem to add a couple of pounds, but I cannot be sure it was the tablet.

Hi there, so sorry to hear you are feeling like this. I was on Bisoprolol for nearly 9 mths after first being diagnosed with persistent AF… I really struggled with the side effects of fatigue and lots of dizziness. my cardiologist and I tried everything, upping the dose (to to 10mg), lowering it, splitting dose, taking all at night and all in morning…but it still really lowered my BP way too much until eventually I was moved to Diltiazem.

Bisoprolol kept my heart rate at about mid 80s, Diltiazem at about early 90s but my BP was better, the fatigue was better, but still dizzy but not quite so bad.

I did feel very fed up and miserable when first diagnosed but I don’t think this was specifically down to Bisoprolol, it certainly doesn’t help that pharmacists regularly change the brand type of meds… even though I always specifically ask for the same …

Sorry I can’t be of much help other than to say Diltiazem agrees with me much better than Bisoprolol, as someone said above, everyone is different and we all have different medical backgrounds that can impact how a med behaves in your system,

How you feel is important, and there are many different types of both Beta blockers and calcium channel blockers…if you feel it is Biso, maybe try speaking with your pharmacist and say that you really need a particular brand, if that won’t work, then an alternative is prob the way to go if it making you feel bad….

I am sure your cardiologist will help if you choose to do that.

Take care

Are you confident that you need a rate control drug at all? Bisoprolol 2.5mg seems to be the automatic response to an AF diagnosis. Once I’d had an echocardiogram confirming heart in good shape, I stopped the beta blocker altogether, but I only suffer from occasional bouts of AF for maybe 30 mins.

I often want to come off all of the meds but I drive for a living and can’t risk it yet. I did lower my beta blockers and it helped .

I've definitely put on weight abd think everyone has low moods but not sure its on the known list of problems with Bisoprolol so might be worth checking x

YOu could ask your GP to prescribe it by brand name if you are sure it's then new version causing the problems.

It doesn't seem to affect me that way. I just keeps my heart slower, but it does seem to create a "wall", when walking, especially up hill. I just can't go any further sometimes, sort of like a govenor on an engine.

Hi

Sounds like you need to check out your thyroid. SSH, T3 and T4.

Akso B12. Oldies need 700 level. I taje Solgar 1000ug 1 x 3 days week. Sublingual as B12 through stomach is lost.

Life is happy, sad and otherwise. Look to the future and be glad to be alive. News is depressing so short sharp beginning news thenn turn it off. Try to dwell on life's beauty, people os different enthity, the children and their acievements and pranks.

One of my grandsons very pretty with his modern hair style was bullied at 14, a broke arm and later a wrist where cameras weren't at the college. Allowed to leave at almost 15, stayed at home unable to get a job whilst 15. Hoping to get a job at16 he is intrerested in the stck market play. I pray that he will get a job soon.

On the other hand my granddaughters 1/2 Brazilian are achieving so well at school it is difficult to see that they love college.

I only wish I was closer. As They are all down in Northshore Auckland 3-4 hours hours away.

Book a trip in your head to look forward to in the future. I have booked as catchup and it will the first time with persistent AF.

Hi, I have found a change in drug manufacturer/supplier can produce side effects. Pharmacists and medics usually deny this and just say its the same drug so what's the problem, NHS is under pressure to get the cheapest. However different firms use different transporters in the drug to get it to the right place and its these that can cause side effects. This maybe what's happened with change of bisoprolol just a thought.

So true 2learn. I always ask for the brand Accord as I know they suit me. At night I also avoid tablets with a strong colour.

Thank you, I think it is as as soon as I got a different brand it all changed.
