I have af and have had cardioversion but after 4 attempts last time it didn't work. Have had pacemaker for 2 years and now have been advised to have av node ablation but I am very elderly and scared.

Hi Martel and welcome.

What is it you are afraid of?

Treatment for AF is to improve QOL so if drugs and cardioversion fails there are few other options. If cardioversion failed to convert you for even a few seconds the PV ablation wouldn’t be an option.

If you are very symptomatic then it may be worth considering an AV node ablation as my understanding is that it can improve your QOL but it won’t stope the AF. The sort of statistics I was given (also my only treatment option) is that about 70% of people find it beneficial in that it improves their energy levels and shortness of breath.

If you aren’t that symptomatic and have a reasonable quality of life then I would consider living with it - as many people in permanent AF do.

I think it is a real quandary as you won’t know if you would benefit until you have had the procedure and we aren’t blessed with hindsight until after the event, unfortunately.

How symptomatic are you? Could you live with AF as you are? What do you call elderly?

Best wishes CD

Hi Martel, welcome to the forum - I’m sorry I haven’t got anything helpful to contribute regarding your medical quandary/ options... but your post made me want to give you a big hug.

I hope it helps to know you’re not alone. Most people on here have felt or feel very scared. And feeling vulnerable can make us feel elderly whatever our actual age. (Just as feeling stronger/hopeful/in control can make us feel youthful and rejuvenated!)

CDreamer’s post is really helpful - she knows what she’s talking about! - and I’m sure others will respond too. Take care x

Hi Martel. Was already in permanent a-fib in 2016 when I had a pacemaker and AV node ablation at the same time. Had many problems with meds and side effects, 2 cardioversions. Am 74 now-off all cardiac meds. Feel better than I did before the procedures. Very happy I had both done. My EP says I'm better now that when first diagnosed. I really hated the medication merry go round. irina

Thank you for your reply. The AF seems to be OK at the moment but apparently if I get it back I will need to have the AV node ablation. I have had the pacemaker for over two years. I am on Digoxin and Bisoprolol each morning. Martel

If you are doing well at the moment that's what counts. Take care. irina
