I believe Dr Gupta recommends magnesium taurate or citrate. So many people have claimed to have had their symptoms reduced by taking this. There's also a spray on magnesium you can use too, or a powder you can add to your bath. I have to be careful with magnesium as it gives me a sore stomach, so what I do is dissolve a tablet in water and sip that water throughout the day when eating, or use the spray. I really can't take magnesium on it's own without food.Have been very lax in doing this lately and need to remember to start with it again.
Thanks for reply. Do you have any symptoms, that dr,Gupta described. Dr. Marcolo decsribed the needs of it together with side effects Yours is one of them. Why are you taking and how is benefit you?
I am religious in taking magnesium. I have taken it for over 5 years now and take 800 mg of magnesium citrate. Before settling on these I had tried various others. I’ve found the large 200mg tablets to be the best. I’m not particularly fussy over the brand either.
Solgar is one Brand I repeatedly use.
I have intermittently tried 400mg capsules but don’t believe them to be equivalent to 2x 200mg tablets.
If I take 2x 400mg capsules instead of 4x200 mg tablets I get breakthrough ectopics.
I definitely think perseverance is needed in order to experience the benefits and think more people would benefit if they persevered with a decent/hefty dose.
I am too but I have great difficulty swallowing them. I tried cutting them in half which in turn gave each half a sharp edge making swallowing even worse.
I would consider Mg Taurate ( I use Nutri Mega Muscleze) & also partnering it up with CoQ10; evidently the latter for AFers should be a level over the top of the normal recommended range. I have a blood test every 6 months to check levels on both; for Mg that is the Red Cell test not the usual GP Serum one, which always shows OK.
I don't take anticoags as CHAD score 0 at present. Before you take either supplement I suggest you consult an experienced Naturopath and mention it to you medical team as well. I recall reading somewhere that CoQ10 has some blood 'thickening' properties but my view is there is more benefit than risk and if you are on anti-coags already probably not an issue but I don't know whether it has any effect on Warfarin levels.
When researching Magnesium I found this website very helpful and probably the most balanced as to the benefits and the downfalls - it has an excellent page on contraindications which I would recommend anyone considering taking Magnesium read.
Thank you very much .CDremer Read the topic you recommended. Of course, it is a lots of contraindication between Pharmaceticul and Natural health practitioners.
I believe, that go with topical magnesium will be the first choice for now until the proper test for deficiency can be available. I am concern about kidney, that getting weaker with the age, and should filtrate all the substances
The only way you can get a test for Magnesium is to ask for a red blood cell test - the bloods your GP will do will only test for serum levels - which remain constant as the body will sacrifice cell magnesium to hold the homeostasis in the serum. You will need a private lab and pay and get someone competent to draw the blood.
Do you have regular kidney function tests with your doctor? If not - ask to be monitored and make sure you track the results yourself - know the numbers.
The good news is that if you take oral magnesium - absorption is very low and if you take excess - it will give you diarrhea.
Absorption through skin spray is often preferred for that reason.
Vonnie - most doctors will be at best non-commital about Magnesium but no, you don’t require any advice, but do research it for yourself.
..to top up a diet which contains a good supply of magnesium but not enough to meet the daily requirement. I had previously told a GP I was doing this and he said ok.
At the arrhythmia clinic this week I told the consultant's assistant who saw me and asked about medication, he said if magnesium was necessary it would be prescribed to us.
I told the same assistant I had just had a yearly blood test for Apixaban and he said he wasn't aware they were necessary so I suggested he checks the latest NICE guidelines...
I have tried magnesium glicinate and also transdermal zechtenstein magnesium oil
Did nothing for my AF . However the transdermal oil does seem to help give me a good night's sleep - I drop straight off which did not normally happen so I am still using it.
