I have been on Pradaxa since I was diagnosed 4 years ago but thinking of asking EP to change it to Eliquis as I have read it is safer. Just wondered which was the most prescribed anticoagulant?
Which anticoagulant is the safest - Atrial Fibrillati...
Which anticoagulant is the safest
Safest in what way?
Personally I take Apixaban and have no problems and like it because it seems to have a good record of cranial bleeds, doesn’t require you to take with food and doesn’t give me heartburn - Common side effect with Pradaxa or have the absorption problems which Rivaroxaban seems to have ie you need to take it with a main meal of at least 300-400 calories to ensure good absorption - friend of mine was taking with breakfast which wasn’t sufficient calories and her liver enzymes shot up - changed to taking in the evening and everything settled down.
Just a very personal view.
I used to be on warfarin a few years ago, and I found it restricted me in terms of diet and I despised the regular blood tests and myriad of tablets, often having different number of tablets on different days just to get the "weekly" dose in range. All very bizzare.
I've got on much better with apixaban, not even had any mystery bruises!
In terms of safety not sure how best to judge that.
I really don't think there is much difference between anti-coagulants. If you can get on with Warfarin then that is fine. The differences between the NOACs is minimal - if you find one that works for you, stick with it. There are very few reasons to change - any differences between them is down amongst the noise statistically. Go with whatever works for you.
