A couple of years ago I was changed from Rivaroxaban to Apixaban but the latter caused me stomach discomfort, indigestion and nausea. After about three weeks of this I asked to revert back to Rivaroxaban a drug that I have never had problems with and have taken for just over three years. Doctor didn't think Apixaban should have side effects but it did for me. Hope this is useful.

I was on it for 6 months and didn't have any problems.

I was on Rivoroxaban for 11 months without any problems, then developed some tummy, digestive problems. Throwing up, sever pain, bloating. My EP thought it was Rivoroxaban, (said he'd been getting reports that there were a lot of side effects showing up as the numbers of people using the drugs increased). So stopped it for 2 weeks and found a real improvement. He then suggested I tried Apixiban, but after a week the same happened. I'm now on Warfarin. A drug I didn't want to take because I felt NOACs were better/easier to deal with. I have had no side effects with Warfarin, so have accepted that for me it's the anti coagulation that works.

Its hard for me to say definetly as I was put on Apixaban and Flecanaide(200mg) at the same time.I get nausea and stomach discomfort, also on 80mg Avorstastin, all of the drugs say in the leaflets that these side effects are common!

So,yes it could be Apixaban!

Yes but... I got terrible heart burn from it initially- but soon realized no pain if I take it while eating. I would try that before going off because it solved my issues instantly. Good luck!

Hi Wendus. When I saw your post., I had to jump in. I looked up apixaban to see that name of the drug here in the US. It's called Eliquis here in the US. The first anti-coagulant I was given in 2011 (dx year for me) was Pradaxa-in a similar class of anticoags as yours. In a short time my daily stomach pain caused me to want to stop it. My cardiologist at the time (in Florida) didn't really listen to me and gave the usual pep talk-you need this med, your GI probs are most likely caused by something else blah...blah...blah... Fortunately I was pushier than he and said "Find something else because I'm stopping these today." I remember the Pradaxa was very expensive and at the time wasn't covered by insurance so paid out ofpocket. Insult to injury! Stopped and 2 days later GI sx gone. My point with this saga is your doc doesn't seem to think relieving your discomfort is part of his job so go to bat for yourself. Qualifying phrases like most likely/usually doesn't/ probably isn't don't hold water for me anymore. I know what my body feels, the doctor doesn't. I also believe that side effects a doctor may feel are rare and probably don't apply to you can sometimes be a 1/2 assed dismissal. During the research and development of meds, all reported side effects are listed even if not common. Which tells me that some trial patients experienced them. If someone did, they why not me? Stick to your guns, demand to be taken seriously, and don't suffer needlessly. It's not his stomach that's hurting. Sometimes we have to stand up to the establishment and be our own advocate to get the treatment that'sbest-AND most comfortable for us. Goodluck finding a med that works better and more comfortably for you. Take care. Burma PS And HAS he checked you for possible GI bleeding which most definitely can be a common side effect with these drugs? I eventually switched to coumadin so I could monitor my own INR at home and have a better handle on possible bleeds. The tests can be a nuisance but I liked having more control over possible bleeding, Now I want off all anticoagulants and 2 weeks ago had a minor procedure which allows weaning off these drugs. I will be happy to see the last of this whole group of anticoagulants. I admit I am biased and want to take as few drugs as possibe. This is my issue but wanted to share. Take care. Burma
