What side effects are people experiencing with Rivaroxaban? Do they recede in time? My main problem is muscle and joint ache, headache, tiredness. I am one month in taking 20mg daily.

My only comment is that the symptoms you describe are very much the same as people say they experience when taking statins. Are you on statins and how long have you been taking them?

Yes, I'm on statins and have been so for 4 years. These symptoms have become apparent since starting the rivaroxaban so I wondered if they were common?

Could be related to the drug and your body’s reaction to it, we are all different. I have been taking Rivaoxaban for the past seven years and not had any side effects as such. About two years in i had a liver function test which was a bit out of range and my dose was reduced from 20mg to 15mg but nothing else adverse to report. Have a word with your medicine prescriber. Best wishes.

Thank you. I wish I could talk to a doctor, but A&E prescribed the drug, then lost all my paperwork before I could be referred to Cardiology, so it's a bit of a struggle to get a follow up consultation!

Can you ring your GP for advice. Some surgeries have access to a surgery pharmacist who may also be able to give you some idea re side effects. Please don't suffer ask for some advice.

I will try the BHF Helpline tomorrow, they are better than the GP! Thank you.

Rivaroxaban 4 years no side effects .. I had some tiny blood spots under my skin in lines . , I sent a photo to haematology team . They said just bruised myself I said I didn’t agree . I was taking turmeric as well ( thins blood )but no stomach pains or g bleeding ut went away . I’m negative INR IN 6 clinic monthly blood tests . Like to reduce to 10 mg from 20 mg but haemo refuse whilst Covid threat . She said take it every day ! The aches pains you Mention is what I got from the most common statin . Forget name . Insisted to see a statin specialist who prescribed a less common statin ruvastatin 5 mg . Blood levels ok no aches joints legs . I wasn’t diagnosed for APS then , maybe I can’t tolerate that common statin as too sensitive , immune etc . I feel fine in these 2 meds . Not another clot touch wood . Cross fingers ( ;Unprovoked lung clot ). No reason found . Maybe from 6 months HEP c viralTreatment few years before caused APS caused clot ???? Always sensitive immune though . I would think if you have joints aches pain leg cramps the statins do not suit you , not many people in here list those symptoms with Rivaroxaban . So easy , kidney test every 3 months . Haemo blood clinic tests every 6 months . I cannot complain about that . Get to see statin Specialist , they know . G p s do mostly prescribe that common cheap statin . My statin Specialist professors knew exactly which statins to try me on , and 5 mg . You

Must push to get reviewed . Common symptom if stains though one hears , cramps in legs pain in joints . Good luck

Not Statins in my case. Definitely Rivaroxaban that caused the excruciating pains.

Thank you Thomas, that is most interesting. Everyone else here is pointing me to statins, but I tolerate them well and have been on them for over 4 years. The muscle and joint pain came as soon as I started Rivaroxaban 4 weeks ago. It would be odd for statin side effects to suddenly become apparent after 4 years, at exactly the time I start a new drug! Knowing I am not alone is helpful.

Blood thinning can make other drugs behave differently . More efficient circulation . “Getting in the cracks “ those are classic statin symptoms most people complain about . Try changing the statin . That common statin g p s prescribed did that to me ( Simvastatin) ?) I saw (Pushed for )UCLH statin Specialist , put me on ruvastatin 5 mg ( low dose ) big bloods ok . Never an ache or a pain again .

Simvastatin???

Bloodredroses profile image
Bloodredroses in reply to KMRobbo

I think so , is that the most commonly prescribed one ? G p s go to statin . It dies not suit everybody . Then need to see CHOLESTERAL - LIPID ENDOCRYNLOGY Specialist . There’s other statins . I find Rivaroxaban is fine for me . Just don’t cut yourself or have a brain bleed accident . Keep off bikes scooters motorbikes .

it was 15 years ago when I had a bit of an issue, and was found to have high cholesterol I was put on it as a precaution. It lasted 2 weeks as it gave me pain in my arms, an something else that I can t recall now so I decided to stop it. I still have high cholesterol at about 7, but the GPs don't bother as at the last reading over 50% of it was the good cholesterol. If I recall the Simvastatin was one of s few statins that were fat soluble rather than water soluble so that hung around in your body longer, but it was the cheapest! its a long time ago so my memory may not be totally accurate.

I am not good at tolererating drugs as my experiences with AFIB and rate control drugs have also emphasised!

Well the Simvastatin was horrid for me .😆( cheap one on g p s list ) plus majority can tolerate . Ruvastatin 0 side effects for me . Us APS Lot too sensitive to tolerate what the majority can due that is auto immune . It’s a jig saw puzzle that all comes together hopefully if you can detective and google it together .

As others have suggested, leg muscle pain more likely due to statin than riveroxaban. I gradually reduced my statin dose over three months from 10 to 2.5 daily, now zero. Leg pain gone away, still take my anticoagulant every day without fail.

Well I take Rivaroxaban. For APS Hugges Or Sticky Blood Syndrome . ( Conseq blood thinners ) I felt so tired before Rivaroxaban . Circulation of oxygen better to brain ? FeelBetter in it but there’s things you can’t do like thin blood more , with grapefruit or is that just Warfarin ? Not too much spinach as high in K which thickens blood .

I noticed the Pfizer seemed to sit in a small swollen lump on My arm . Felt nothing at all . immune isolating it ? Then 1 week later .lump gone , into system . Tired slept 12 hours per day . Third week normal . Takes 14-21 days for immunity right? My point is maybe the Rivaroxaban distributes the statin around your blood more efficiently . That’s why we take it .? Maybe could be getting the statin ‘mixed ‘ in better ? I’m

Not a endocrinologist ( CHOLESTERAL Specialist) Or a haematologist (BLOOD . )Just the way it has worked and helped me . So many people complain about the aches pains in leg from some statins . I have no problem 5 mg ruvastatin . 5 mg simvastarin aches pains were horrid . I Pushed g p to see endocrinologist ( CHOLESTERAL Specialist ) changed statin off g p s list of statins . Problem solved . My 6 monthly bloods the right levels of INR . on Rivaroxaban . Just saying , you have to push beyond g p if you can not tolerate the meds they prescribe . Go up the ladder to see Specialist. Cannot say more than personal experience . Investigate further .

I had severe muscle and joint pain. Pains radiated throughout my body. I phoned my GP after 3 days who suggested my body would get used to the drug. It didn't. I saw the GP after 12 days. I had to borrow a walking stick to get to the medical practice from the car. People waiting for their appointments were shocked at the sight of me, as was the GP. I was taken off Rivaroxaban.

I was offered any anticoagulant of my choice. I decided on tried and tested Warfarin and bought my own test meter.

The pains didn't subside. Three weeks of blood tests later I was found to have polymyalgia rheumatica, in my view triggered by my body's reaction to Rivaroxaban.
