're dental work

I am writing to let you all know that I have had my two teeth out, with little or no bleeding! I stopped taking my Riveroxoban on Tuesday, 3 days before the extraction, as I previously had implants and had horrific bleeding. I have AF and had an ablation 8 years ago. It worked well for a few years and then I had a bad spell and had to be admitted to hospital, after a week they put me on Flecainide and warfarin. Then my husband was taken ill with heart failure 2 years ago and he takes Riveroxoban, which I thought a good idea as you don't have to have blood tests all the time. My implants or the bleeding caused my AF to play up but I have had an echocardiogram and all is well. I still have to have the treadmill test, which I hate because I get so out of breath! All I have to go through now is to have the new teeth fitted, hopefully before Christmas! Best of luck to anyone having dental implants!

Glad that it went well and better than the time before. Tooth extraction can result in bleeding even when there's no anticoagulation. Do hope your new teeth will be in place for all the eating that's in store over the festivities!

So pleased things are looking up!

I am interested in why you had bleeding having implants. I have one, and my recollection is that the screw which holds the implant fits right into the jaw bone. Pre-warfarin, I didn't have any bleeding at all having this done. Did the bleeding occur when you had the original tooth or root removed to facilitate the implant?

Hi jeanie-p---- I'm going to have one dental implant in january. The implantologist said not to stop my Apixaban as i obviously needed it, and that he would put in some small stitches to stop the bleeding if necessary. I think I will have a word with my GP about whether or not I should stop the Apixaban beforehand --your prase ' horrific bleeding' has unsettled me a little. Obviously I wouldn't be leaving the surgery till the bleeding had stopped or was of no real consequence.

I too am having dental implants and reading your earlier comments I must say this has unsettled me as well. I am right at the beginning of the implant process so have not had any discussion as yet whether I have to come off rivaroxaban. The thought of horrific bleeding has made me think I should not have it done.

Sorry to worry you so much, but I do think that dentists are not properly informed about Riveroxoban. To.be fair he wanted a letter from my doctor stating that it was ok to leave off the Riveroxoban for 48 hours before surgery My GP said she had been in touch with a haematologist the previous week regarding another patient who was in a similar position and that was his advice. I have since read up.on it and it seems that there is no antidote for Riveroxoban or any of the newer anti-coagulants. My advice is to ask your GP, or cardiologist how long you should stop it before you have the implants. The bleeding started in the surgery, but only became bad on the way home. I think I am just one of those people who are unlucky! Probably my age and other ailments don't help!
