Hi, has anyone out there had dental implants whilst on Apixaban ? If so, did you continue with it or not, or did you have bridging therapy ? My dentist can't seem to decide what we should do, which I find a bit disconcerting !!

His professional body should be able to give him guidelines on apixaban. General advice is not take the one the day before and start again straight afterwards but he should know..

I have had implants and no change of anticoagulants. My dentist is excellent and I have never had to come off apixaban and more recently riveroxaban for any invasive dental treatment. I bleed a little more, but not so you'd notice ...... ! He is an implant specialist and as our age group are well represented in his surgery I guess he knows what he is doing!

2nd question ! Do you have adrenalin normally in your local anaesthetic, because I had 2 teeth out recently without adrenalin and found it quite painful.

Last year, I had to go to the specialist at the local hospital as the wisdom tooth was beyond the capabilities of my dentist. I explained about my AF and the need for adrenaline free-anaesthetic. He told me he was aware of this, but didn't use adrenaline-free as it was the adrenaline that binds the anaesthetic to the tooth. He said the extra pain from using adrenaline-free would be more of a trigger for AF than the adrenaline. He used a lower level of adrenaline than normal (by mixing adrenaline-free and normal. I had no problems, either with the extraction or AF.

Yes, that's what I was thinking, it was painful without adrenalin, it wore off too quickly.

I had a tooth removed which had a large cyst at the end of the root, took two hours to get it out, then I had a bone graft on the site, never came off apixaban. I'm having the implant put in next month and wont be coming off the apixaban. I didn't bleed excessively but did have alot of bruising. No need to come off them if the dentist knows and it's well planned and managed.

I recently had extractions plus two implants in one visit Dentist told me to get advice re stopping rivaroxaban from my GP. Contacted GP on phone who told me it was dentist’s responsibility. Amazing! I decided for myself, stopped rivaroxaban for 48 hours And all OK. They do tend to suture round the implants which helps.
