It's a complex decision balancing bleeding risk with thrombotic risk. This is a guideline gloshospitals.nhs.uk/ShareP...

It is normal for anticoagulation to be stopped for any operation, minor or major although some doctors will proceed in some cases. You should only be off for a day or so with apixaban as it has a very short half life.

Interesting. I'm a CHAD2 and on Rivaroxaban. Yesterday I was with a consultant and discussing a required biopsy (prostate unfortunately - not looking forward to that!). Apparently these things can bleed for two or three days. His recommendation was that the drug is stopped 10 days before and restored once any bleeding has stopped. Makes sense to me.

This seems extremely excessive. See recent post which had link to Gloucester Hospitals policy and guidelines. Also talk to your EP or cardiologist. They may have a fit that it's that long. Mine said unfortunately warfarin is the longest to stop and when I had an angiogram in June that was only for 5 days but I was bridged on clexane to minimise risks.

Hope all goes well with the biopsy.

Not easy, Peter. I find myself between the devil and the deep blue sea. Telephone calls today with appointments for the scans and biopsy on Monday and Tuesday respectively. That at best, gives me 4 days of no anticoagulant. I'm told to follow this so we shall just have to see. I would have thought that with Rivaroxaban, a couple of days would be fine.

Well that's a big improvement though not as good as the two days!!!

there are guidelines for each of the NOACS and they relate them to each type of operation- 48 hours is often the longest period - think that consultant is thinking of Warfarin????
