Does stress affect AF?

I went through extreme stress about two months ago and it seemed to have sent my AF into overdrive. Only now am I feeling 'quiet' which is bliss but I am still experiencing breathlessness. Can AF turn into heart failure? My GP is concerned and arranging a cardiologist appointment to check on this.

Prolonged untreated AF can eventually lead to enlargement of the left atria (cardiomyopathy) and eventual heart failure but not instantly for sure. This is normally reversible if suitable treatment is given. General cardiologists may not be fully up to speed on the latest trends in treatment of AF. Electrophysiologists are the specialists. You do not give us any details of your present treatment and drug regime so it is difficult to comment but many drugs can give such side effects.

Good luck and do read all about AF from the very useful fact sheets on the main website (AF Association)

Stress is a well known factor in AF. Even light stress is enough to send my heart wobbly, too carrie and my PAF is well controlled by drugs. Breathlessness is so unpleasant - I have it randomly without being able to say why it comes and goes, so mine may be caused by drugs (Bisoprolol and Flecainide).

It's good that you are being referred to a consultant - a specialist in heart rhythms (EP) would be better than a general cardiologist, as Bob has advised.

Easy to say, but try not to worry especially when you feel breathless, as the anxiety makes it worse.

Very best wishes. xx

Carrie, certainly stress whether ' good ' or ' bad ' can be a trigger for AF for very many of us, me included.

I found on one occasion when I was left in fast AF ( long story ) for 3 weeks that I went into heart failure. This was a one off and led to me agreeing to my first ablation. I am very wary of this happening again as it was a frightening experience .
