Dental trigger

Went to the dentist yesterday for s filling and after the procedure had an horrendous bout of AF. Don't know whether it was me feeling stressed or the local anaesthetic that triggered it. Daren't take any flecainide incase it reacted with the drug. Has anyone had a similar experience and would it have been ok to take my pip?

Sorry you've had such a miserable experience - as if a dentist visit isn't bad enough!

There were some posts on the forum earlier about dental anaesthetic containing adrenaline possibly triggering AF and that we should ask our dentists to use adrenaline-free injections.

There is no reaction to Flecainide listed, but someone else here may know more.

Did you ask the dentist for an adrenaline free local? This is vital if you have AF> My dentist has it on my notes. Hope you feel better soon.

Thank you, I didn't know that but will remember for any future visits.

I asked my E.P. about dental anaesthetic with flecanide and he said it would be fine.x

Could have been the adrenaline that I have heard they use did you have a numbing agent?

Pre AF knowledge I had an attempted tooth extraction a couple of years back. As a dental phobic at the time I had little knowledge of the stuff they used for numbing agents. I recall I felt really physically odd after around 6 injections but had no idea it had anything to do with my potential to have AF at the time. This is another area of ignorance for both medics and A-fibbers that could do with being highlighted!

I agree, yes I did have a numbing agent and the info from everyone seems to confirm that it was the culprit. Glad I've got this blog to call on for help.

This is exactly what happened to me on two occasions many years before I had what I now know is AF. I am hypermobile and it takes a lot of anaesthetic to numb my mouth, the dentist said maybe some of it went straight in a vein? But actually having experienced AF now, the feelings I had at the time were just the same but very short lived. So maybe its the adrenaline in the injection and adrenaline occurring naturally in AF?

I think that adrenalin definitely is again player

I'm wondering why no one has mentioned antibiotics, my dentist specifically asks me to take 4 before any treatment in case of infection so far so good

Not heard of that

Its standard procedure in Australia for anyone with any type of heart condition they told me, as any infection can cause arrhythmias as for injections, no problem for me, mind you I do my relaxation technique whilst lying there most of the time.

Same thing happened to me many years ago before dentist had time to start drilling! I always make sure that I have appropriate injections now.
