I have to have a wisdom tooth extracted next week, and the root is very near to a nerve. I have met the dental specialist who will do this procedure and I explained, I was worried was because I had a problem with bleeding last time (although I was on Warfarin then). I have faith in him, as he was very through and patient in his explanation etc. He said I do not need to stop taking Edoxaban, as he "sees patients like me every week"
I still feel tempted to not take it on the morning of the extraction.
Anyone else had similar experiences?

Wightbaby. Had a back tooth extracted 5 HOURS AGO . I take Apixaban which is twice daily. I was told to miss this mornings dose which I did. All went smoothly, Dentist packed my gum and put 1 stitch in which will all dissolve. Honestly it was a very easy procedure. Ive just had my evening meal ( soft food) I've had very little if any bleeding. Came away with a fact sheet and that was it so dont worry. You could always ask a pharmacist about It for reassurance. Good luck.
There should be no need to miss a dose. Below is a link to the NICE recommendations for all anticoagulants. At the top of the page, click on “Scenario Edoxaban”. It’s worth taking a look at everything but scroll down to the section relating to dental work. Given what you say about your Dentist, it seems weird to ignore the advice he has given, particularly as it conforms with NICE recommendations.....but your decision of course
I had a large tooth extraction 3 months ago and my Dentist asked me to stop my edoxaban on the morning of the extraction. She said it was key to not having excessive bleeding.Despite having 7 numbing injections she managed after a real struggle to get it out and I had no bleeding.
Like you previously I was taking Warfrin and that was not so good in the same circumstances.
Hi. I hung on to my temporary filling for years but recently gave in and was told apixaban was not a problem... 45 mins of pushing and pulling later my wisdom tooth was out and healing commenced. No probs..😁
Had two extractions on separate occasions in March for molars. I was asked just to stop Edoxaban on the morning. Dentist packed the gum and gave me some spare dressings. Was OK and I didnt need to use them. I think I would forego the edoxaban on the morning of the extraction Justin!
I had a planned extraction of a large upper tooth - seen at 8.15am, delayed Apixaban until 9.30am - no problems whatsoever. Felt chuffed that it had been managed.
Then I later broke a bottom wisdom tooth into shards - awful pain, four hours after my Apixaban dose the dentist did a smash and grab raid on it shard by shard as the mess needed to be removed, Apixaban or not. I was scared but there was minimal bleeding for a few minutes even though the Apixaban had reached optimum level by then.
The first socket was packed with haemostatic gauze and stitched - the second was left open. It sounds like your dentist is on the ball and will do what is necessary. Best wishes.
Thanks for that! It's because of what happened when I was on Warfarin...made me rather nervous!!
Had a rear tooth removed. Dentist knew i was on Edoxaban, but said current guidance was to continue with treatment rather than stop beforehand. Had early morning appt in case of bleeding. Very little bleeding - "less than most people". Given swabs to use in case of further bleeding - none used, does this mean edoxaban not working?. Had a blood test last year and bled for 10 mins. 2 this year without problems
Hi. Yes, I wondered the same as in the end, it didn't bleed much and has been OK since. I am on 30mg per day edoxaban and as far as i know I have not had a blood test to test whatever they are supposed to. I know its different to warfarin and INR's, but I know you are supposed to have some sort of test. I was changed over at the beginning of lockdown last year
Just a point, over here in France I am asked to take antibiotics , a one dose , befire my dentist does any work. Something to do with arythmia and dental work.Does this not happen in uk?
