2nd cardioversion tomorrow

I'm having my 2nd one tomorrow as the one I had in jan only worked for 3 days, anyone else like this and if you've had a 2nd one did it work. The nurse on Friday that took my blood really burst my bubble when she said if the 1st doesn't work the 2nd one won't . I'm feeling really low now she's said that . Thanks

Julia I am sorry that you had this put in that way but it may well be true. Cardioversion is never a cure for AF it just stops it at that time and there is no knowing how long it will be so. I often wonder why doctors keep using the technique without due explanation as I feel it gives people undue hope sometimes.. I had three cardioversions all of which worked but they were not for AF as such. but atrial tachycardia post ablation. when my (regular) heart beat went high (140+). The DCCVs returned me to a more reasonable rate whilst the healing continued.. You really need to talk to an EP who can consider all the other options but it may be that you will remain in NSR for some time before the next AF event comes along. Presumably you are anti-coagulated and on some rate control drug such as bisoprolol?

Yes I take 10mg of bisoprolol ,3mg warfarin, 1.25 ramipril, 200 mg amiodarone and 150mg of thyroxine for an under active thyroid , my ep says if this dccv doesn't work I can't have another , and I've to try ablation but I need to lose weight, but I'm struggling with that as amiodarone works against the thyroxine , so all in all I'm very fed up

Hi Julia. As I'm sure you know I am not medically trained but I am struggling to understand why you are on amiodarone when you have a thyroid problem! OK it is one of the strongest anti arrhythmic drugs but according to European Cardiology Society guidelines it should be the drug of last resort. Where are you and what hospital are you under?

Do hang in there please. AF is a long journey I'm afraid but there are some good travelling companions here to keep you cheerful.

Hi Julia- go into that cardioversion seeing an exquisite NSR on the ECG, in your mind. will be hoping it is successful for you on Wednesday. We are all pulling for you!

Hi Julia, please let us know how you get on and have faith that it will be successful. Since my ablation last June I've had two cardioversions and the last one in March appears to have worked - fingers crossed. However I have changed my lifestyle and diet since then. I too am on the dreaded Amiodarone and have a slightly underactive thyroid. Do you have PAF?

I am sorry is I seem a bit of a downer I have had 12 CV and they will not do any more. I have multiply problems that do not help each other so I am not the "NORM" I was put on Amiodarone for a short while and was taken off but cannot remember why.

I take 2 x 80mg Sotalol 1x 125mg Digoxin and 4.5 mg Warfarin. I was due a Pace and Ablate but that has been scraped now. Because my lung problems have worsened.

Good luck on Wednesday...and stay positive. True - it's not a cure as such and continued success depends on how prone you are to AF starting up again. My first CV was in October last year and I am still in NSR and feel very lucky with my fingers firmly crossed! A second try is certainly worth trying. Afterwards, take it easy for a while and take each day as it comes, with a positive outlook. Do let us know how it all goes.

Thank you everyone, it was today I went for my cardioversion and it worked , 1st time, last time it took 3 zaps. I'm feeling well is it a good idea to take it easy for a few days till it settles down or can I carry on as normal, not that I do much exercise while in af, I've had it permanently since last July before that it came and went . Thank you all again for taking the time to reply to me xx
