Woke up with pounding heart and really bad chest pains in early hours of morning. When checked heart rate was very low 46 bpm and O2 92% ECG showed bradycardia and when blood test done had low potassium? Anyhow now back in normal sinus rythem and back home but had to have potassium tablets yuk. Drs didn't want to do anything else as diagnosed with PAF and waiting for an ablation. Can low potassium be a side effect of AF ?

Hi John

Im not a doctor but from my experience earlier , I don't think low potassium can be a result of AF but other round

Low potassium may cause irregular heart rhythm. You should take care and I feel for you about potassium tablets , try to get it also from food just like banana , dates oranges

Low potassium my be side effect from other drugs , or dehydration , poor diet and others

Low potassium is not good and should be treated soon

Regards

Hi. Low potassium is not a side effect of AFib but it can be a direct link to the cause. I have been on Potassium pills for about 3 years, also iron and Vitamin D tablets. Had ablation and have been taken off potassium, iron, BP meds, my cholesterol meds, Lasix, and cut my Propafonone in half. Your vitamin levels defi itely make a difference in the function of heart rate and rhythm. Hope you feel better and continue to.

Hi John,

Sorry to hear of your trip to A&E. My potassium was found to be low during a bad AFib episode. Seems to be quite a regular feature. Hope you soon feel much better. Regards Dee.

Hi John, - as I understand it, low potassium can contribute towards the likelihood of AF but also actually being in AF can lower your potassium levels . Is there anyone medically qualified who can confirm this ?

Waiting for discharge letter then I have to make an appointment to see GP I have to have a kidney function blood test just to check potassium levels are up. Otherwise have to investigate cause I eat normal healthy diet so no reason for low potassium.
