Hi Rabbitie
The answer is it depends, if you are booking for a short term holiday insurance, then look around online, but make sure you declare the A Fib as you could end up with them refusing to pay any claim if you don't. Most of them only put a small loading on unless you are awaiting a hospital procedure, in which case they usually won't insure until afterwards.
If you are looking for annual insurance, then check your existing contacts, I get annual cover from my bank (Nat West) under the current account benefits, and I rang them and added A Fib for a small annual charge (I can't remember exactly but around £60) It really depends how often you travel.
Plus if you are going to Spain, do get a EHIC card from here

I know there have been stories this week in the news about Spain and these cards, but it's free and carrying it will only make life easier.
Have a great holiday, I'm off to France soon travelling round, and hoping to take in a couple of stages of the Tour (Go Cav.... :))

Just be very careful with Spain as a recent TV and radio expose revealed that many hospitals will not accept EHIC and will only accept credit cards. BEFORE they will treat you. This appears to be a function of the state of the Spanish economy.. The problem comes in that if you voluntarily pay for treatment expecting your insurance to re-pay, THEY then say you should have used your EHIC. The advice given was to deny that you have insurance and demand that they accept your EHIC.. Typical Europeans!

Hi Rabbitie
The AF Association website has a list of travel insurers who may be more sympathetic to those with AF. The list can be found here:

I hope you manage to find suitable insurance and enjoy your holiday!
Kind regards

Thanks.
If I go for the insurance with the holiday and then look at the extras to cover my ills it is extortionate. I go online that specialises with declared illness/conditions and saves me at least 60%. My sister used the same one as me and had to claim when in hospital in sri lanka which the paid up no problem, however they will not insure her any more
We have used Flexicover a lot and they have paid up on three separate occasions ( me once, knocked down by a dog couldn't travel and OH twice MI couldn't travel first time, AF on hols the second). The last claim they had changed underwriters. My OH has 7 separate linked heart/circulation issues and AF. I just have paroxysmal AF.
Last May when OH developed permanent AF on holiday in the Canaries we went to a private hospital and had to pay up front for first days treatment, board and investigation, but the hospital ( Hospiten on Lanzarote) were fantastic medically and refunded our money as soon as the underwriters Mapfre paid up ( very tardily sadly). Had they not accepted the claim Hospiten would have taken the remainder from our card. We have just got two quotes for a week in Italy and found All Gold with the same underwriters (Mapfre - Spanish company) was half the price of Flexicover. They are on the BHF list of possibles for insurance. They were slow but they did pay up except for medication on discharge and visiting taxi fares.
I have found Staysure to be very helpful, but better to phone and speak with an advisor who will ask a lot of questions rather than book online. They will accept A/F as a condition. My Doctor has advised that this must be reported before travelling so as to ensure correct covering. All the above advice given about Spain is relevant and we can all benefit from this input.

Hi Rabbitie
Other people have pointed out that this week there has been quite a lot of scandal regarding the EHIC matter, as I work from a specialist travel insurance company, I can assure you, we are hearing more & more cases of people travelling within Europe that are unable to claim emergency medical assistance via the EHIC and have to settle medical costs themselves.
I have AF and I would never travel abroad without adequate insurance, mainly so I have peace of mind and more so, that I don't have to pay any hefty bills, should the unfortunate happen.
Free Spirit can assist with this type of insurance and my I wrote my latest blog in support of Arrhythmia Awareness week.
I hope this helps
