Omega-3s and PCa

I was just reading today about the recent UCLA study (published 12/13/24) that found that omega-3‘s and fish oil slow the proliferation of prostate cancer. The study only applied to men on active surveillance. Does anyone have any information about its benefit for men with advanced PCa?

I have also read about a study in 2013 that find the opposite but questions have been raised about that study’s methodology and controls so that definitely doesn’t sound like the final word on this.

Unfortunately the system will not allow me to paste links to the studies, I’m not sure why.

Thanks in advance.

No, the UCLA trial does not say what you think it does.

ascopubs.org/doi/abs/10.120...

It only found that there was a reduction in a protein called Ki-67, which is only a biomarker for active cell division. There was no decrease in actual progression (Gleason grade, tumor length, Decipher genomic score, or PSA).

I did see in that but they did suggest that a reduction in Ki-67 is tied to reduced progression, metastasis and death or at least time to death. You are right, I should have more precise. I know the researchers are saying this result should lead to more studies. I just wondered if anyone had any insight as to whether fish oil capsules are potentially beneficial or harmful. We’ve took them for years but I had my husband stop when he was diagnosed. Any thoughts or just unproven/unknown at this point? Thanks.

Manson et al. did a randomized trial of omega-3 fatty acids. After 5.3 years of follow-up, there was:

•No difference in incidence any kind of cancer (including prostate, breast and colorectal cancers) between omega-3 and Placebo.

•No difference in deaths from any kind of cancer.

Once a year we have a community working dog buy of salmon oil from Alaska. I give a small amount each AM to my dogs in their kibble. They have very shiny coats.

But the best part is they are pushing the upper limits of their breeds life expectancy. However over 50 years in this hobby I would say the majority of my dogs have died from cancer.

My conclusion is if you think it may work and you desire soft shinny hair go for it.

PS Our study has never been published or peer reviewed.

Most fish oils contain Vitamin E as a preservative. I’ve read in several sources that Vitamin E supplementation should be avoided in PCa patients.

Explorer08 There is so much " Medical Puffery " published around prostate cancer diets . And basically , there is no conclusive scientific evidence any of them work . For example : Fried Tomatoes help ward off prostate cancer . I am the poster child for alll things , TOMATOE -- All my life , and I am 85 years young , I ate , and still do bushels of tomatoes , in my salads , sandwitches and fried for breakfast with my bacon and eggs .

Some good it did me -- NOT . My conclusion - eat a heart healthy diet . Include a wine or my favourite : Single Malt Whiskey . " ALL IN MODERATION "

I love your whiskey reference. I credit Crown Royal for giving me 14 years and counting after PCa diagnosis.

Omega 3 is an important part of a healthy diet. Most people only get a fraction of what they actually need. I have 3T of ground flax and chia every morning. Will it slow my prostate cancer? I dont know, but it definitely supports cardiovascular health and having a healthy body is supportive in the fight against cancer.
