Docetaxol Chemo Bone Pain

Hey Everyone

So dad just had his first round of chemo on Tuesday 3/18 followed by Neulasta shot the following day. He was fine for the few days he was on his steroids but now yesterday and today he is having serious bone/joint aches and pain. I read online and checked with the nurse and started him on claratin and they prescribed him flexirols.

Does anyone have any other tips that may help get through this and lessen pain? Also, about how long did it last for you? Did it get better with each treatment or was it always about the same/worse?

Any tips/insight would be appreciated it

Thanks

Hello, DWall85. Your dad's bio doesn't provide specifics but, in general, his experience with docetaxel as you describe it was mine and many others here on HU. You need to familiarize yourself with how each chemo type works - here is a simple docetaxel resource from Cleveland Clinic: my.clevelandclinic.org/heal...

In the simplest of terms, docetaxel kills rapidly dividing cells. These are cancer cells, yes, but also some healthy cells. It's like a slow, constant injury to tissues. Chemo results in a lot of cellular debris floating around our bodies, triggering systemic inflammation and site pain while the body tries to move this debris out. This will likely last as long as the treatment lasts.

As a first approach, I would suggest your father take in fluids (but make sure you aren't flushing out electrolytes and antioxidants with too much water) and engage in consistent (daily!) simple exercise like walking and stretching to help his body's natural excretion processes. Good luck. - Joe M.

I had extreme bone pain in my spine a couple days after my first Neulasta shot. Using antihistamines prevented it from being really painful the following times. Hopefully the Claritin works for him like it did for me. I took an antihistamines regularly until I was done with docetaxel. I had some minor bone pain from the Neulasta shot after that but it wasn’t too bad.

Claritin worked for me.

Hello. My husband was in a similar situation after his first round of docetaxel. The doctor prescribed dexamethasone from days 3 to 6 following chemo and it really helped. He never experienced that type of pain for the rest of his chemo treatments.

Good luck!

I'll keep that in mind for his second treatment. Thanks so much

Neulasta can cause bone pain. I had significant knee pain after the first docetaxel infusion, less with subsequent doses.

Had a similar experience to your Dad’s after my first docetaxal round followed by Neulasta. Was advised Claritin would be helpful beginning the day prior to the chemo infusion. Never needed the Neulasta with further rounds so can’t say if it’s the solution for sure. But I never had any bone pain after any of the following 5 rounds of docetaxal, so in my case I feel the Neulasta was the primary cause of bone pain after the first round of chemo. I had high volume widespread metastases.
