bone pain with chemo

Concerneddaughter123 profile image

hi everyone!

My dad just completed his second chemo treatment with docetaxel. He is now having bone pain in his right femur. We will have another PSMA scan after the third dose. Going into chemo most of his metastases had shrunk on ADT. While I know new pain could be a sign of worsening metastasis, is there a chance the pain is just from the treatment? Or the treatment may be working? He’s also on the bone strengthening injections. Has anyone has increased bone pain with chemo?

Thank you! ☺️

I had some aches with the Undenyca (WBC)shots I got the day after an infusion to keep my WBC up. If he's getting those it could be the source. I was advised to take a Claritin with the shots and continue for 5 days to alleviate any pain. Sometimes it work sometimes not. The discomfort went away after a few days. Not sure if that's any help but a possibility.

He is not getting those injections as of now, as his WBCs have remained within normal range so far. I heard about taking claritin with chemo as well. Did you only take it for the WBC injections? Thank you for your response!

Yes only after my wbc shots did I take the Claritin. Had 7 of those. Chemo was never a problem as far as pain for me and I had...have several mets...They had me take Dexamethasone the day before, day of and the day after. Then back to my daily 10 mg of Prednisone. Perhaps call a nurse at your cancer clinic and discuss. Where I go I have better luck with any problems to ask about with a nurse than waiting on a Doctor. But that's just my case. Hope the best for your Pa.

For safer side, I will request you to setup appointment with radiations oncologist. It will be easy for RO to target the pain area and that can resolve the pain on immediate basis.

I also agree with other comments to take claritin or benadryl also.

Thank you, I will have him do that.

My bone pain after Docetaxel came from the Neulasta (self-injected about 24 hrs later), not from the chemo. Even Claritin didn't seem to be of much help. After 1st dose and "toughing it out", I did use some Percocets for a day or two (esp when going to bed) on my 2nd and 3rd doses. Really helped.
