Turkey Tail Mushies

Someone recently posted on this forum about taking Turkey tail extract supplement and provided the source. I checked it out and compared the analysis to a similar product made by Oriveda. The poster is using mushrooms by "Real Mushrooms" I went back an forth with the company a few times largely because I found a confusing error on their web site that I wanted clarified.

The wrong container net weight was posted on one of the pictures. The representative took this very well and did not fight with me as have some vendors when I pointed out errors. They were actually thankful and (after my asking) offered me a nice discount. So I ordered two 100 gram bulk packages for me, my husband and out dogs.

On the subject of mushrooms, I have been taking Lions Mane in my morning coffee & it works for me. Not sure about the effect on cancer but am more mentally alert which ADT robs us of.

What was your analysis of the difference between the two brands of turkey tail? Thanks.

I did not make a side by side comparison but should have.A bit exhausted right now and would appreciate someone else doing this comparison.

Consumer Lab reviews various mushroom supps and recommends brands. I usually go with Bulk Supplements, but there are others. You want the body of the shroom, not the white milky veins, as I understand it.

I take their capsules as well as use the bulk immunity mix in my morning coffee. The dose for their capsules purchased from Amazon is different from what I purchase at local pharmacy. They told me it varies from batch to batch. Point is, you need to be aware of this in order to ensure you get your desired daily dose. for me that is 2000mg, I find them to be very responsive.

Yeah, that might have been me.

My only question with that company is interestingly they claim independent laboratory testing but I fail to find any such documentation on their website. Or labeling...

Interesting as well is every single package of mushroom I've ever received from Oriveda have dates and the content changes with every batch! Thereby attesting to the testing and labeling reporting ACTUAL values of what your are consuming. Oriveda adheres to:

Produced in full compliance with the following quality standards :

ISO 9001

ISO 22000

HACCP

cGMP

and also

Halal

Koosjer

USDA organic (EcoCert)

And test reports are available on their website as well. For the Turkey Tail the two reports are from November 2023 and July 2024.

Now I'm not advocating any company per say, other than to share what to look for in a product as taught to me by a trained Medical Oncologist certified in Alternative Medicine that I actually met with and had multiple sessions with to discuss diet and supplements at MSKCC, prior to any treatment and a few times since. It was eye opening and educating.

You can make your own decisions and choices, but labeling is one of the defining elements that shape my decisions and was stressed by the Doctor. If the website has a lot of glitzy stuff but provides little substance, I keep going. I get some of my stuff from UK or Europe providers as their purity laws and leveling laws are also very different than here in the U.S., like my Reishi Spore Oil...

Anyways, good luck!

I apparently did not look deep enough. The fact that they had the wrong weight information on the image of the bottle online should have prompted me to look more but I am getting sloppy in my old age. Yes every batch of oriveda had lot analysis and there is no evidence of this on the Real Mushroom product. I will se when I get it. I looked over their web site a bit more but would hope that someone better at this will examine it more thoroughly. There was mention of third party verification somewhere but I can not find it again. There are some vague mentions of analysis and blah blah blah but not lot analysis etc. This is from one of their blurbs which sounds nice but I would like to see it supported with numbers and references. I like the idea that their extracts are hot water extracted from mushrooms only? Not sure if this beings along other active ingredients or not? To me it is more like really strong mushroom tea with a lot of historical backing?

Hot water extracted from 100% turkey tail mushrooms

a little more checking oriveda might be lot tested but not sure. their turkey tail is extracted from mycelium not fruiting bodies as it is for Real mushroom. both list reasonable beta glucan content with oriveda being a little higher but not enough to account for the price being about twice as high. Oriveda also lists polyphenyls at a fairly low level no idea if this is important, i am pretty sure it has not been studied as much as beta glucans. also the real mushrooom is a hot water extraction and concentrate of the fruiting bodies and is "likely" to contain other important ingredients. others have suggested this and i do not see any evidence that the extract is "purified" so basically there seems to be a lot of room for imporvement in information but both oriveda and real mushrooms supplements do not seem to be a s scammy as most. Host defense which is sold everywhere is total bullshit. The turkey tail is just ground up mycelium Shame on you Paul Stammets, I guess you have made enough money to assuage your conscience about selling snake oil.

Turkey Tail Mushroom - Uses, Side Effects, and More

Overview

Turkey tail (Coriolus versicolor) is a mushroom. It contains polysaccharide peptide (PSP) and polysaccharide krestin (PSK), which are used as medicine.

Turkey tail mushroom grows on stumps and the decomposing wood of trees. The PSP and PSK in turkey tail mushroom might help slow cancer growth and boost the immune system.

People use turkey tail mushroom to improve response to cancer medicines and radiation. It is also used for muscle strength, fatigue, UTIs, and many other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support these uses.

You be the judge.

Beta Glucans, Poly Saccharides, Triterpenes and more, have mechanisms of action which may or may not be beneficial... You need to read and understand what they do and see if it's something you want as part of your diet, supplemental regimen.

Some evidence provides support but most studies don't go too deep!

I have adjusted and changed my supplements over time. Mushrooms are primary, but others have been added to address Inflammatory Disease, & Immune system modulation as well ;) I've dropped Berberine and Milk Thistle some time ago, but include today Curcumin, Reservatrol, DIM and a few others...

For me, I understand that as an adjunct to my therapy, it's benefit may be supplemental to my overall health and not necessarily a direct effect upon my cancer. If it does, as an aside, I'm very happy for it! They say some 60%+ cancer patients take supplements, and have expensive urine! Lol

Again, one of the biggest things the Alternative Medicine Oncologist stressed in our meetings was labeling! You think you're smart enough to sift through the garbage that's out there? Identify their source, separate fact from fiction, not only in their claims, but read through the deceptive labeling! You have to expend some effort for sure, don't not just accept what's basically window dressing on most of these websites and companies!

Please, do the (your) research!

:)
