”Reel Recovery” retreat … great program

This past weekend I participated in a fly-fishing retreat conducted by the Reel Revovery organization. It was a wonderfully uplifting and encouraging experience.

Reel Recovery has these weekend retreats all across the country and are done with absolutely no cost to the participants!

These retreats are purposefully small: only 14 participants. With no religious or political underpinnings, the retreats are a “safe place” for all.

It is a structured program with periods of fly-fishing, times for “courageous conversation,” meals, and time to get to know other guys who are also battling this damned disease. The staff is helpful, attentative, encouraging, and do everything possible to make the weekend a memorable experience. Lodging is provided.

Each participant is assigned his very own “fishing buddy” whose job is to coach the participant in the delight of fly-fishing. Guys who have never had a fly rod in their hand learned how to cast the flies and land some fish!

I came back from the Reel Revovery weekend with renewed optimism and a bit of spring in my step. I would encourage you to check it out for yourself: ReelRecovery.org

I participated on one last year and fully agree with all that you say. I encourage anyone to give it a shot fisherman or not.

Was it close to your home so you could drive there?

Yep, about an hour drive.

How far are you from the closest event?

Only 7 hour drive which isn’t a problem, but we are on vacation when next one is available so I was thinking about next state closest.

I participated in 2016 and it was a life changer in how I approached my cancer diagnosis. It taught me to open up about it, especially with other men. I think it is a wonderful group and contribute annually.

Does the program pay for transportation to get there? I don’t see anything that is close by.

I really don't know, but seriously doubt it. The logistics, liability, and costs would likely overwhelm the program's resources.

they did not offer to pay for transportation the one i attended was near Yosemite so we took the trailer and make it an adventure. i bought a fly fishing setup but have not used it yet. a friend is going to take me to som appropriate local places to try my luck
