my dad is starting CHAMP trial at Duke in a few weeks and his neuropathy has gotten really bad, especially in his feet. Any suggestions?

I had developed neuropathy in my feet about 9 months after my radiation. It came in the form of what felt like random high voltage shocks in either of my feet and at any time, even when driving which was cumbersome.

Thanks to the info received from a former member here, my pain went away completely after a few weeks of taking NAC, Benfothiamine, B1 and R-Alpha-Lipoic acid. I knew this was what was helping me because I tested not taking anything on two occasions and each time the pain would return after around 2 days without the supplementation. That was around spring 2022.

Of the four supplements above, I've stopped taking NAC after a few months because I read that it can be damaging to stay on it for a long time. I still take the other 3 though.

In the spring of this year, I began having another type of pain in my feet. Not sure if that one is neuropathy based or diabetes-from-prednisone based, but my feet began to hurt every evening not as electric shocks but as constant burning/pressure pain. With prednisone out of my system, I went back to doing keto to undo the acquired insulin resistance and I began taking L-Arginine and L-Citrulline amino acids to dilate my blood vessels. The pain in my feet went down gradually over the summer and is now totally gone but it does come back within a day or two whenever I take a cheat day (like eating spaghetti at a family gathering). Luckily, it now goes away as rapidly as it came once I do adhere to keto more strictly.

I am not a doctor, much less an expert at oncology. I am simply someone who has (had?) prostate cancer and neuropathy issues. The above is what I did for myself and it worked for me. If anyone thinks of doing something similar to what I did, you should discuss it with your doctor first to ensure there is no conflict with your oncology treatment. For example, I take Alpha-Lipoic acid which is an antioxidant and it would not be a good idea to take antioxidants while undergoing radiation since radiation works through free radicals and antioxidants fight free radicals and that would in theory reduce the benefit of the radiation.

Gabapentin 300mg three times a day. Rib feet with Gold Bond Menthol.

Wear a good quality pair of compression stockings.

I have suffered a lot from neuropathy. I’ve tried all sorts of natural remedies including compression socks. They may have helped knock the edge of a bit but eventually stopped helping all together. I’m on so many drugs, I really didn’t want to add another to my regiment however, I recently reached out to oncologist asking for help. He prescribed pregabalin. I was reluctant because of the side effects I read about but, I’ve haven’t noticed any so far. No neuropathy since.

I'm not having neuropathy but in general, gabapentin might work. Also consider a foot massage machine. My mom has feet neuropathy and she really likes hers. I liked it so much I got one for me but just for fatigue. And it's helping circulation which is good.

I rub bay leaf oil on my legs and feet, it seems to work.

Not to critique your post - but I wonder if rubbing some substance on the feet helps because of the substance, or because of the rubbing.

I would think the act of rubbing is going to improve circulation in the feet which in the case of PAD is very helpful for neuropathy. And I'd suggest most people of our age are at risk of PAD, especially in light of some of the side-effects of ADT on the circulatory/cardiac systems.
