I thought the exact same thing and I just posted on this recently. Like two weeks ago I woke up with intense pain in my right TMJ. That is the joint where your jaw pivots up and down and from side to side. The discomfort was severe, I couldn’t even ear a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or a banana. I have only been on Lupron for 1 year now, however I was concerned that it was a side effect.
So I visited my dentist. He took a panoramic x-ray and compared to my last one taken 4 years ago. He showed me his findings. You could clearly see the space between the upper and lower jaw has substantially been reduced. He said this is not from the Lupron because of the quickness of how the pain set in. No he said, this had to be caused by something else. Well, it turns out my 11 year old son and I were wrestling the night before. He put me in multiple rear naked chokes. He must have distorted my jaw in the process. Dentist said it should resolve in 3 weeks time.
thank you for the reply. I haven’t done any wrestling with my grandsons.😂but hoping it is something simple like that. I am headed to dentist specialist tomorrow who took care of my dead jaw syndrome a few years back. I’ll keep you posted when I find out what the doc says
My dentist also prescribed a nighttime mouth guard. It was intended to help with night time grinding. However, given my TMJ pain, I now wear it throughout the day and sleeping hours. It has been two weeks and my pain is slowly subsiding.
Have not heard or read of lupron associated jaw problems. I always think of jaw metastasis because of reading "Mr Quarter-to-Two: Life and Death with Mother Nature's Misfits" which is an excellent compilation of true outdoor short stories. The book is named after the pivotal character of the first story who succumbed to prostate cancer eventually but developed painful jaw metastasis during the course of his disease. So that individuals story and the literature show that metastasis is a concern. Hope its nothing serious such metastasis or residual osteonecrosis from the xgeva.
I started treatment in January 2022, monthly Lupron and xgeva. I recall experiencing jaw pain and was very concerned about ONJ. Dentist ruled it out, but I still managed to chip 3 molars due to excessive pressure and grinding at night. Got a night guard and changed from Lupron to Orgovyx in May 2022. Xgeva shots dropped from monthly to 60 day intervals, starting with January 2023. I'm putting the night guard to the test, as it's showing signs of wear after just over a year. The jaw pain has subsided, but still noticeable in certain positions. There might not be scientific evidence to support the correlation, but the timing of starting treatment and tooth/jaw issues makes me wonder.
thank you for your input, my friend. I did have dead jaw syndrome back a few years ago. My jawbone was exposed through my gum. I had a great dentist, who specialize in this, we stopped Xgeva and approximately nine months later, he pried , the dead bone out, and my gum grew over the jaw bone . I am going back to see him this afternoon and I will let you know the prognosis. Thanks for your input. It is much appreciated. Keep on plugging away. I’ve been doing this for quite some time. Main problem is loss of energy, but I keep on exercising golfing and partying as often as I can.👍🎼🍷🏌️♂️.
I've never heard of Lupron (or any other ADT causing jaw pain). Not everyone is as lucky as you are with your osteonecrosis healing . But given you're not on Xgeva or any other anti-resorptive therapy, it shouldn't return. And your symptoms are more typical of muscle spasm than anything more ominous.
