An update from yesterday. How do you deal with a virus on top of a weak immune system?

I took my husband in to the cancer center today. It turns out the fever and some other symptoms are not due to the Radium infusion last week. It seems he has a virus (Covid and Influenza A tests were negative) and was severely dehydrated from hardly eating and drinking.

So they gave him fluids by IV and took blood work. His immune system is not in good shape, in fact I believe his white cell counts are too low to do the Jevtana right now.

So our focus is to work for him to kick the virus and pull some blood numbers up and then give the Jevtana a shot.

Please send good thoughts. Getting him to eat and drink is not easy and if he gets dehydrated again I am worried they will put him in the hospital. He is so weak. He took a shower, was drying off, and suddenly couldn’t stand. He had to set on the edge of the bathtub for 15 minutes before he could go out the door and to our bed.

I work at home, but was in a meeting when he started the shower, so I did not check on him for 30 minutes, at which point he had finally gotten to bed but was shivering. He had no way to call or text me for help. It really worried me when I found out later. I set up a Ring camera this evening in the bedroom so going forward I can keep an eye on him, even when I am in a meeting.

He feels pretty good in bed, it is when he stands up he has problems. But I think staying in bed for a few days without fully getting up and dressed and moving around will make it harder for him to recover from this virus.

Does anyone else have experience trying to shake a virus with low blood counts and platelets?

I’m sending a big warm ehug out to both of you and good thoughts -vibes that he shakes that virus and rebuilds his bloodwork quickly.

Hubby is very fortunate to have such a loving, caring caregiver at his side. Best holiday wishes for “ both “ of you.

I’ve started home hospice largely because of low blood count’s eliminating any treatments. I’ve found that an oxygen concentrator is a big help before and after doing a “demanding” activity like showering.

Medicare supplied a system that was big, loud but free. I was then very lucky - somebody had left a portable, quiet Inogen system with my hospice nurse which she has in turn loaned to me. I can even do the odd small home project again now without getting desperately out of breath.

I’m wishing you and your husband the best.

That sounds like a very clever way to do things. Thank you for your kind words and I wish you the best as well!

I really sympathize with you and your husband. The best immune builders are AHCC and Beta Glucan. My husband (who also has PCa Stage 4) takes 2 capsules of each daily. Both must be taken at least 30 minutes before meal. It is particularly important to buy real immune builder supplements, not fake ones. If you are interested, please send me a private message and I will give you the details (I forgot how to get to private messages). Good luck to you and your husband!

how is your husband doing ? It’s been a few days since this post started. How did his blood work come out?

If it was me in your husband’s condition I would want immediate care like another IV for fluids, and rest. Is his virus respiratory in his lungs? That would be serious in his condition. Pills at this time are to slow to build up his immune system. Certainly lots of fluids and high nutrient food if he can take it.

He just has no energy. He had an accident in bed the other night and normally would want a shower and fresh sheets. It took me hours to get him into the armchair 2 feet from the bed, so I could change the sheets. He still has not managed a shower. It doesn’t seem good.

He had some breathing issues last night, but it looks like he forgot to use his steroid inhaler. Sitting up while I did the bed and using his inhaler fixed that. His fever was 99.4 last night, but gone this morning. His blood oxygen was 98.

His electrolytes from the labs were okay, but white blood cell is 1500 and hemoglobin is 9.4.

He said this morning he can’t believe how fast he is going downhill. I am still struggling to get him to eat or drink well.

Thank you for asking. I am not sure what else I can do. I doubt I can get him even downstairs.
