Interesting. I’m the opposite. I’ve only had Lupron. I feel very little pain from my Lupron shots. A quick stick in my hip which is relatively painless. Takes maybe 10 seconds. I may feel a little ache at the injection site for maybe a day, typical of all injections for me and less than what I feel from a flu shot. I’ve also had them in my arm but prefer the hip because of the post-injection ache. I prefer the ache to be in my hip.

Both Lupron and Eligard consist of two components (a carrier and the medication?). I think the main difference is: with Eligard, the two components are mixed by an interesting-to-watch procedure carried out by the nurse (or ?) just prior to injection, and with Lupron, the two components are mixed as part of the injection process. I've had both, and I haven't experienced much difference.

The Eligard will be injected into fat and it creates a small bump that you can feel. It desolves over time but some say the bump can persist. These bumps can add up over time. The Lupron is injected into muscle, no bump/ball as with Eligard.

Eligard for some people including myself has harsh side effects.

During Covid there was a Lupron shortage and many patients were switched to Eligard. Many patients reported to their doctors the side effects were worse with Eligard. MAYO said due to the reports from many patients they were switching back to Lupron.

Now your individual hospital has contracts with the supplier willing to charge less. But you can call in advance and have them get the brand you prefer, just verify it with the nurse before the visit and before the injection and before they open the medicine as once opened its too expensive to waste

Boywonder is correct. My first shot in the stomach felt like a blow torch and it took about 15 minutes for the pain to subside. 3 months later, different nurse and nothing. I mentioned that at my last shot and that nurse said that the first one did it too fast. So make sure you request a slooow shot. All this is bad enough without an untrained nurse or doc rushing the procedure.

I have had both. Not much difference. Quick bee sting from Eligard, aching hip for day or so from Lupron

couple tips.

Be sure the vial is very well mixed - tiny gains not mixed in can make it hurt

close to body temp - not cold

Pushed in slowly

Even if done perfectly, sometimes hits a nerve that really stings

Eligard here, just had my second 3-month dose a few weeks ago. Injected into belly fat (remember "pinch an inch"?), stings pretty good for a minute, bleeds too if I don't put pressure on it, probably due to size of needle.

Is anyone else skeptical about the evenness of the 3-month "time release"? When I got my second, I could still feel the tiny lump from my first, so I wondered if there would be a temporary surge in released dosage as the new one started and the old one was finishing. I suppose they measured all that during development, but then differences between patients, etc. ... not losing sleep over it, just curious.

I've been on Eligard injection every six months since 2018. I received every shot in the stomach area no pain just a little sting but it matters who gives it to you also.

I had 2 6mth shots of Eligard at Mayo and one Lupron at MDA. The physical aspects were like TJGuy said above. However, I felt that I tolerated Eligard better over the 6 mth period although the Lupron shot was for months 12-18 on ADT and may have been a factor. Prefer Eligard but really not an issue. Good luck!

Lupron & Eligard contain the same medicine. Here’s an easy read about them:

I’ve had both over the years. Pain has never been an issue with me. Every time I get an injection the nurse always warns me this is going to hurt. NOT! Lucky me 😊

I've had 27 injections of lupron in my rear-end (3 a year for 9 years). No pain any time. My family doctor (a former nurse) does the injections.

I started with my first 2 injections with Firmagon and I have had 2 subsequent 6 month Eligard injections (two different medications). The Firmagon seemed more painful at the injection site and remained painful for a day or two. With Eligard I don't have much pain at the injection site but get flu like symptoms (achy muscles and joints) for a day or so.

Due too Lupron shortage I had Eligard a couple of times. There were two problems. The shot in the stomach fat is supposed to be made at an angle, but the nurse was not aware and put it perpendicular to the skin. As a consequence, it apparently went into a ureter and caused me to urinate blood right afterwards. Also there was a problem with it being too viscous, so they had to mix a second batch, which took a half hour or more. That has never happened with Lupron. I understand Eligard is the Canadian equivalent of Lupron.

had both over 2 years. Local doc used eliguard. Md Anderson used lupron. Only issue I had was I had one 6 month shot. Put me to sleep for a week. Would never do that again.
