Million-Dollar Drug:

The FDA approved a gene therapy from Bluebird Bio that represents a potential cure for a rare blood disorder—at a price of $2.8 million per patient.

Will anyone be able to afford the cure if it comes down the pipe from this source?

Not at all... only that those of us looking for a medical silver bullet may be disappointed by the cost of the bullet.

It relates to pharma pricing, a life and death issue to some of us.

Yayahahahaya yayahahahaya…. Actually I could buy myself one , but I would not want to pay cash , so I’d want a loan ( might pay 50% down tho) and make payments . At this time in my life , we don’t need debt ( debt free and well provisioned for retirement, now ) or for something that might only get used for a few months ( I’m at 70% average life span in October and only 16% … 12 months later ). Buying something with 7 years payments isn’t reasonable.

Hmm...Hey Brother K!!

Can't afford the van , however, I'll chip in for a wheelchair ramp! (assuming you have a van)!😃

Thought you were getting around on your 3 wheeler?🤔

Best,

AJ

Yea … I’m getting around on my e-trike pretty good. My outdoors time is limited to early mornings ( 66f ), as we are having sizzling 100f plus temps every day for nearly two months already and expect one to two more months of same. I’ve got a great ( $3800 ) power lift on the back of my pickup truck that transports my trike pretty well. The down side is that its difficult for two old farts to hook it up ( ratchet straps hooks bungees etc. ) and dismount it and it kinda flops around back there creating a lot of uncertainty about it when hitting bumps. Probably good around town but untested going to the coast, as of yet. I have to travel with a full potty setup that can be deployed very quickly. If I had a van with a rear or side HD lift ( big ford type ) , my trike would transport anywhere easily inside the van , and I could establish my camping style potty inside there and not have to pull over on a busy highway and embarrass myself taking care of unavoidable business , that can come uncontrollably in an instant yayahahahaya. Can you say “ awkward “ yayahahahaya yayahahahaya. I fully expect to get going more when the heat subsides in October and start getting out and trying to transport the trike more and farther … I’d be happy , right now, with just a trip to our local zoo ( too much dangerous heat ) . 😁

I really appreciate the really nice offer brother AJ , you are some kind of upright and compassionate type of guy. The world could use a lot more people like you. we really are quite comfortable and “ well provisioned “ here in retirement… I’m not going out and burn $50K but if absolutely need be , I might reach around behind the wash machine and grab a wad of green out of a coffee can ( just editorializing, no one should be stupid enough to keep their money anywhere except their bank accounts. ) and buy what is needed. It’s kinda late in the game for me to go out and spend $50K on a van now, no matter how much that would improve things for me. Odds are I’d be long gone before the warranty expired. It is what it is. Thank you again buddy , love ya . ❤️❤️❤️

have to pull over on a busy highway and embarrass myself taking care of unavoidable business

I understand your problem

I make it a point now to have prearanged spots that are safe and discrete enough on the Illinois Tollway system in the suburbs and city that I can stop at for an emergency pee if my trip is more than 1/2 an hour, usually exits that have a metal guardrail that I can hop over into some grass.

Yayahahahaya. .. it’s a b-atch isn’t it . I’m lucky because my Silverado has those opposing opening doors. I can pull over . Open out both doors and pee in my OJ jug, or quickly plop down the porta potty ( sorry for the graphics yayahahahaya ) and I’m good to go. ( yayahahahaya ). The hammer will come over and stand in front of the door, or put up a sheet with magnets I carry for additional privacy, if there is too much foot traffic. Still it’s awkward if it’s near the Mickey “ D’s “ drive thru or a packed busy Walmart parking lot. I’ve had a few security guards take notice and come over for a look - see …. We tell them it’s a medical emergency ( which it is ) , we’ll be gone soon …. and they go away…but keep us in view , just in case. Yayahahahaya yayahahahaya.

😁

I knew a guy with a big pick up. You could say he used to pee on the front bumper although Im sure he was aiming for the ground. He would pull over, open the hood and pretend to be looking at the engine while he took a leak.

Very few people pay for their own FDA-approved treatments. If these cures were not paid for with the Other People's Money of third-party payer systems (whether private insurers or governments), there would be no investment in the research that seeks them out.

Consider the FDA's decision in June 2021 to approve Aduhelm for all Alzheimer’s patients. without restrictions. That drug only costs a measly $50k a year per person. But for millions of the potential US recipients of this drug, that "modest" cost would be way out of reach without the help of the Other People's Money of our Medicare program or private insurers.

For now, however, Biogen's gold mine is only producing copper pennies for them. Since there's really still no proof the drug actually works (and then WHY did the FDA approve it?), the private insurers said they wouldn't cover it yet. And the Medicare decision-makers logically decided they would only pay for patients within clinical trials. Without such a limit, Medicare was estimated to need to pay out about $30 billion a year just for that drug!
