Goodnight,

I'm sorry if I'm annoying but I don't know what to do nk who to turn to, maybe I just want to vent... I'm single daughter...

I am writing to you for my father, he has had prostate cancer since 2002 and I explain his evolution in my biography. Today we have admitted him because he was drowning and they discovered that he has covid and a pleural effusion. They have taken fluid from him to analyze but the doctor has told us that the results will take days and that seeing the color of the fluid and his history does not seem to be good...

Can someone please give me some hope?

thank you very much to all.

Which chemo has he had?

He has not had chemo. He has been with Zytiga and prednisone for the last 3 months but due to his drowning the doctor suspended it in case it was heart failure but they did an echocardiogram last Friday and everything went well... Since he was still drowning we went to the emergency room and they discovered the pleural effusion... and I feel so devastated and sad that I don't know where to go because he also has covid and we can't handle him... I know that I can only wait for the diagnosis but I need someone to know or has been through this gives me some kind of hope if there is any...

Is it too late for Paxlovid? (it must be started within 5 days)

He has had dyspnea for a month...sorry for my ignorance but what is Paxlovid? Thank you very much for answering...

The doctor has not given importance to the covid and he is bowing down due to the consequences of prostate cancer, a new cancer or a pulmonary thrombosis... I'm sorry, but I've been in the hospital all day in the waiting room and maybe I haven't explained myself well .

Pleural effusion is a common symptom of Covid-19. Paxlovid is a treatment.

Yes, it is what I expected, but the doctor says that the infection is ruled out due to the appearance of the extracted liquid and the analyzes and X-rays that have been done... when removing the liquid my father says he feels very well...

Good morning, everything seems to indicate that the pleural effusion that my father has suffered is due to metastasis of prostate cancer... he will do a PET scan to see the extent and then make decisions with the doctor. The analyzes are within normal limits and he is doing very well now after having removed the liquid...Could you tell me now what the treatment options and life expectancy would be? Thank you very much again everyone.

Not all Pleural effusions are the same and we all have various co-morbidities that impact the answer. 4 years ago I had unilateral huge pleural effusions which were a direct result of my prostate cancer. They were removing more than a liter every 2-3 days with a needle. They then implanted an indwelling catheter so I could drain the fluid at home. I started on chemotherapy at that point and my chest fluid volume dropped rather dramatically after the second round of six. I kept the catheter in place for 7 months before having it removed and I have not had any pleural fluid since. I have large pleural tumors but they are not changing in size. We are all so different in our pathology and our responses that it is not possible to take one experience like mine and apply it to your Dad's situation.

I only offer this to let you know that pleural effusions are sometimes treatable. I would be much more worried if the doctors said it was due to Covid. When I got the Omicron variant (despite vaccinations and boosters) I worried about Covid going to my chest since I have greatly reduced lung functions. I did get the monoclonal antibodies since Paxlovid was not available in Colorado.

Have hope and trust your Dad's medical care team. It is hard when you do not know all the terms and technology.

Izas my brother had an indwelling catheter after 3 trips to the emergency room to drain the fluid. He felt great after it was drained but it returned. Being able to drain it at home was so much easier. As DenDoc and TA above mentioned, chemo may be an option. Thinking of you as you make decisions.
