Where is Firmagon administered? Is it in a doctor's office, a hospital, an ambulatory surgery center?
Thanks!
I received it before I was referred to an Oncologist. I got a loading dose in my urologist's office, administers by a nurse.
I had it done by my family doctor. He took the time needed to apply it. The urologists I met had never used Firmagon before. So e.g. I got just one injection initially. After calling Ferring I insisted on the second one.
Hello, All of those. It has to be administered by a medical professional. Try and have it done by someone who has administered Firmagon in the past. If you withdraw the syringe too quickly you will get swelling for a few days. Good luck!
Thank you all for your help!
Here in OZ it is administered at the hospital but I can not see why your GP could not do it.Interesting to hear about withdrawing the syringe too quickly as I have swelling for a few days after.
Mine was done in the urologist's office by two nurse's. They put them in my stomach both of them at the same time. It welted up and then dissipated out over a couple days.
I just had my first ones and awful ended up with painful big welts. Any idea if this gets better or other techniques to avoid this?
Mine is given by my RO who is experienced he keeps saying i could have my GP do it but i do not trust him. It is important they mix it correctly and with draw the syringe slowly then put pressure on the puncher hole for a short time to stop the chemical following the needle withdrawing also continue to not move for a short time. Last injection he was in a rush and i paid the price. I have swelling for about 6 days
For 5.5 yrs it's been by my Urologist. GP could do it, but Urologist specializes in Prostate Cancer and I respect her 2nd opinion. Mines Lupron in the butt cheeks though.
I had my two introductory shots at the dispensary by a trained nurse. Subsequently for 25 months it was at the day care center of a cancer hospital administered by a doctor. Thereafter I decided to take matters into my own hands. I self administered Firmagon for 5 months. It's no big deal. Many people self administer deep subcutaneous injections for other medical purposes so why not Firmagon. There are plenty of YouTube videos showing how it's done.
Australian here.
I used to get it administered in the oncology ward of my local private hospital by the head oncology nurse. The last 3 monthly injection must have been administered incorrectly and my PSA went from 8 to 28 in 3 months. My testosterone was also around 250 (no where near castrate)
I had a local General Practitioner inject a one month Eligard recently and my PSA dropped to 13 in 4 weeks. I instructed him to inject slowly and ensured there was no leakage. I believe this was the failure of the oncology nurse.
I received another dose yesterday by the GP. If my PSA goes down to 8 (my nadir so far) I will be happy.
If my nadir does not decrease below 8 soon Im dead. Sooner than later.
I had mine done in a uro office by a tech I think 5 years ago
A total mess with a cellulitis fiat a long time
Still have a slight scar
After that, the uro office had a training person come in from the company to train the staff

Please got to the Firmagon website(link below). They have excellent instructions there which are very important to follow. Print these out and give to a skilled nurse practitioner who has done this before is your best choice. Any hospital with an oncology center should have someone have this person. I would NOT use an urologist as their focus and expertise are in other areas.
If the instructions are not followed to "t", it is YOU who will pay the price in unnecessary soreness and pain afterwards for several days.
You have to be PROACTIVE here as it is your body.
I just had my first firmagon shot on Monday. Two of them (something about an initial booster). The shots were given in my doctor/oncologists office. Terrible and painful rash / swelling at the site. I'm not sure how common this is but will be researching.
Doctor's office. Make sure they know what they are doing. The nurse was going to give me an IM injection of Firmagon. Luckily I knew that it was SubQ so told him to double-check.
