Using a sauna seemed rather innocuous and I enjoy taking a short sauna a few times a week.

But I ran across these studies:

I looked over them quickly but did not see a correlation/relationship between HSPs and sauna use? Did I miss something?

in reply totreedown

No. I didn't post that part. Saunas increase heat shock proteins. Example article: sciencedirect.com/science/a...

What got me looking into it was a description of AR activity, how AR antagonists work, and the related HSPs.

I'm wondering what the thoughts are about possible benefits vs. risks. It might be a don't care or just another "therapy" without sufficient proof outside of the dollar proof for marketers :(

I have read of others thinking infrared saunas did something perhaps in he sense if warming your cells to a killing point. Not something I ever pursued for more information though. We have a sauna and my wife uses it more than me. I prefer steam showers or just a nice hot shower especially after a ride in the cold months. A cold beer as company keeps me in there longer.

The degree of heat required to kill cancer cells is very high and should be in proximity of the tumor. But, at that high temp, regular non cancerous cells also die or get damaged seriously. I prefer a mildly hot water bath which causes vasodilatation all over the body ,increasing blood flow and stimulating immune system.

in reply toLearnAll

You talked me into it. A hot bath before bed always helps me sleep.

I had a hot tub, and I kept it at 94 F. I could sit in it until doomsday and would never get too hot. I love me a bath, but there is something inherently awesome about a tub that stays at the perfect temp for you and is accesible at any time. Boy do I miss that baby.

Not sure it is relevant or even on topic but my urologist cautioned against hi heat while under the influence of Lupron ( Eligard ) He did not give a reason and I did not ask.I consequently quit doing hot yoga (105*) once a week with Coco, I of course had a Doctors excuse so what could she say? ;-))

in reply toScout4answers

I will venture a guess that perhaps he was thinking that heat might exacerbate hot flashes. Hot flashes are a very common side effect of ADT. Sounds like a win/lose. You win/Coco lose.

I'd appreciate if you'd ask him and then post the answer.

I'm on Lupron for three years and about five months ago started taking showers as hot as they will go and ending with a cold rinse as cold as it will go.

Thanks.

Another possibility increased heat will increase circulation and potentially increase the amount of LUPRON in the circulation. Just a theory.

Oh great. Here I am in the hottest big city in the country -- Phoenix -- reading this. I'm not on eligard and haven't been for a while. I dread being on that during the summer here.

in reply to

Lol! I also live in Phoenix. I used estrogen patches for ADT and I didn't have an issue with flashes. I think just a low-dose estrogen replacement (0.025 mg/day weekly Climara patch) would probably do it too. I talked to my MO and my urologist and they both say that a low dose E replacement will not interfere with ADT and will get rid of some of the sides.

All just thoughts. Penny’s in the hat. Someone here on HU mentioned that there is biological proof that cancer cells become apoptoptic at 107f.I responded, why dont we all go out and buy jacuzzi tubs and stay in for 20 minutes or as long as possible. I then remembered a conversation with a buddy in Santa Barbara in the mid 1990’s who told me his neighbor claimed to have cured his cancer by taking 110f hot tubs for 10 min, about as long as he could take it, then plunging into his cool swimming pool. Then repeat each night.

My wife and I went out and bot a tub on Dec 1st. Expensive at $7k, but I’m at the point “where it all works, but nothing works well-maybe if we put enough treatments, early enough, we may make progress”. In Florida there is a law that says 104f max (but ours has an override to 106f temporarily).

So, I join in the experiment. Have felt like a human guinea pig since this all started in October of 2020.

I think something like that wouldn't be good for my heart. I've had ablation surgery for atrial fibrillation.

RSH1, speaking of experiments, how is your mBAT going? I remember you were having some PSA creeping. Are you still going Supra Physiological T?I know a few other guys are trying different experiments like 1 mo up/ 1 mo down, while others 3 mos. up/ 3 mos down. Some 1,000 ng/ml T down to zero, some 700 ng/ml T down to zero.

My understanding is this is a way to extend/postpone castration resistance. Are you learning things you can share with us?

Thanks always,

Mike

in reply toSpyder54

Hi Mike, I'm on mBAT. It's going well and I showed my test results and program to my MO. Shockingly she is on board and wants me to continue. I'm very happy with the results so far. My PSA did not go down last cycle but I suspect that is because my T is starting to recover. Lab results show that it was about 350 last ADT phase. So I'm starting Firmagon as soon as my MO can get it authorized. You should join the facebook group. I talk about it there. If you are interested, PM me and I'll send you an invite.

Take care, Russ

perhaps not quite what you were asking, but it says here Finland has very high rates, but so do other northern European countries (presumably Finns have the highest sauna use rate in the world)..... research.tuni.fi/pcrc/prost...

Finland has relatively high natural background radon/radiation levels as well which maybe a contributing factor. Have also copped a bit of radioactive fallout over the decades.

In alternative cancer treatment clinics in Germany and Austria it is common to see the use of whole body hyperthermia as a means of inducing fever (and transurethral hyperthermia for prostate cancer) to cause cancer cell apoptosis. There is some scientific evidence to support the use of hyperthermia in cancer treatment.

This is something I have always found a bit confusing/concerning and have yet to work out a straight answer. Certainly HSP's are involved in cancer proliferation, but on the flipside, many of the things that are recommended to help maintain good health also generate HSP's and it is thought that this generating of HSP's is key to the health benefits seen.

Weights, running, exercise in general, fasting, Sauna all increase HSP's (and many of the "good" foods from what I have read). The cancer cells themselves are already overexpressing HSP's, so it maybe that the use of Sauna and other HSP generating healthy lifestyle choices increase HPS's proportionally more in the rest of the body than in the already over-expressed cancer cells and provide a overall net benefit, maybe.

I still include Sauna as part of my protocol, but am actively looking for some data on this topic, specifically in the area of of the effect of external heat on Cancer and its HSP's
