Stopping Abiraterone

He everyone. I understand that it is not safe to stop prednisone abruptly but is it safe to stop abiraterone abruptly? Dad is suffering severe side effects and doesn't wish to continue. Many thanks!

Abi can be stopped and it takes about 5 days to clear from system. Predni usually needs to be slowly tapered..a slow taper means reducing 25% dose every 7 days and then stop...Check with your Doctor.

Yes, you can stop abi immediately. Prednisone prevents the adrenals from manufacturing cortisol. It is important to coax the adrenals back slowly to prevent problems.

I was going to request to stop my prednisone only 5mg daily, because of out of rhythm cardiac issues. Like the AFIB/Atrial Tachycardia I was in 11/13. But.

My med onc told me this Tuesday that I needed to keep taking Prednisone to keep my BP down. Abiraterone alone contributes to HPB. Can't stop one without interfering with the other.

Thanks Tall_Allen,Read through main section for now. One reason for asking is that my EP doctor kind of perked up when I reminded him my Abiraterone/Prednisone combo (yes at lowest dose allowed). He says that Abiraterone and Pred can cause cardiac rhythm issues.

i.e. AFIB, atrial tachycardia

What side effects is he having? Is he on Lupron or similar also? That would be a much more likely source of them.

I stopped when my liver numbers were out of whack. I now take 3/4 dose. Perhaps he could tolerate a lower dose.

Hi! I needed to stop taking Abiraterone because of elevated liver enzymes back in August. I stopped taking Ab. with no need to taper off, etc. under my Oncologist's direction, with no issues.
