Resistance Training Specific for ADT Patients?

JPnSD profile image

Is anyone aware of a resistance training program that has been specifically designed for the challenges and goals that ADT Patients would have? I am meeting with a personal trainer who is a veteran and has worked with VA rehab programs and we are looking to devise such a program for a local Cancer Ctr for their ADT patients. BUT, if one already exists out there, all the better to start there and make improvements. Please let me know what you may have encountered. I am hoping to get others interested/involved.

It can be done if you’re willing to pay the price.

Me after ADT by weight training. Private message me. I’ll hook you up with my guy.

That’s really good, man. I didn’t realize you could chisel on ADT. But you’re living proof

It requires hard work and to actually increase muscle mass with castrate T levels is nothing short of a miracle. Your goal should be to maintain muscle mass with proper resistance training and diet. Don’t forget leg workouts and not just upper body. It can be done and being as fit as possible will help in ANY prognosis. Stay strong!

I didn’t know it was possible either. My MO told me that is people that did weight training it way better energy wise and healthwise during normal therapy. I found one of those little muscleman trainers. I walked into his office and took off my shirt. I asked him “I am starting hormone therapy and I will have zero testosterone. Can you make sure I don’t look worse than this a year from now. He said if you look like that after a year in my gym I will close the doors.“ He works me hard but safely with lots of reps. Every time I go I swear it will be my last time. But I actually feel pretty darn good for having zero testosterone. If it wasn’t for the lack of sex drive it for some stomach problems I wouldn’t even know him on any medications. Fear is a great motivator. I hope they can inspire a few guys to work hard at it. Nal, on this site will agree I’m sure.

Looking good. What is your age and what are you using for ADT? What is the time period for your before/after? Where r u located? Sounds like it might be near LA.

I live in orange county. About 45 minutes south of LA. And I started Lupron and Zytega about 3 1/2 years ago. I started working with a trainer a few months before I went on the treatments. I went on a “vacation” after 21 months. Vacation lasted about 14 or 15 months until my PSA started going up and they found one met on L5. I had SBRT on the one met and started Lupron/Zytega again a month ago. I never stop working with this trainer tho. I don’t miss more than a handful of days a year.

Did you feel the vacation in the gym? Or not enough time?

To be honest I did. It was about 15 months off. I gained strength faster. Actually I notice it more so the last few weeks now that the vacation is over, the workouts seem a little tougher and I seem to get winded a bit sooner. But I’m determined not to do any less than I was doing before. Just gotta push harder.

Its all the same stuff. Work all the muscle groups to keep them active and throw in some cardio. Some can do it on their own but most people need the encouragement a trainer provides. I know its a highlight in my day when i walk out of thr trainer’s gym. I use a guy that has about a 800 square foot storefront gym and just takes one at a time or couples and its perfect. Its a combo physical and mental therapist it seems

I wrote to Dr. Schroeder via an email I was able to find for him in a google search but received no response. Dr. Howard Soule of PCF gave me the contact for Dr. Lee Jones at PC Med. Oncology at Sloan Kettering who deals with exercise physiology and I got a response within hours that he would review the program we are developing.

PCF has given me 10 minutes to present on the program at their annual Sci. Retreat in October.

Might you have any better contact information for Dr. Schroeder?

Many thanks.

Maintaining or even slowly increasing your strength on ADT is no deal if you consistently target your muscles 3 times week. For me twice upper body, once legs + back feels optimal. I like doing it, feels great. Mainly free weights plus body weight (chins and push-up variations). A little HIIT on the stationary bicycle with 20-second all-out pedaling that is for some reason the one and only exercise where my strength is declining.

I’m a big fan of HIIT workouts, high-intensity interval training— cardio + strength calisthenics. There’s a lot of trainers on YouTube, one of my favorite is TIFF & DAN. On ADT, you are facing lower RBC counts, lower O2 capacity, and loss of muscle mass. HIIT helps compensate for those losses.
