Started two weeks ago with a UI, but was able to empty the tank with some burning and pissing very often. Started on an antibiotic. That didn't help, so on to a different antibiotic that started last Friday. Pissing became more difficult that next day and Sat night thought I was going to need a catheter, but a warm bath finally emptied out enough. It was a tough day and night.
Then Sunday morning things were so much better and for the next couple days. Still pissing at least every hour, and some burn, but was emptying out OK. Now today, barely able to piss out anything with a full bladder. Not fun.
Waiting for Urology to contact, the referral is in for first available and I also sent a note.
I have already had two TURPS, the last on in March. And because of that I have to wait 6 months before they will radiate and and try to kill this beast. So the last thing I want now is another TURP.
So, is there a port they can put in and bypass this? And then be able to remove after radiation? No big deal if I have another TURP done then. ?
Anyone with an idea of how to home remedy this one? Warm tub seems to be best. Maybe someone else has gone thru this hell. Like drink a cup of olive oil? ( JK ) but desperate.
Suckadoo !

Hi Dave, I am so sorry to hear about this situation. I know how it feels to have a full bladder and not be able to piss. I literally begged a home care nurse to come and put a Foley catheter in immediately when I was in similar difficulty. If you already have an active infection and you are backing up urine in your bladder I would be concerned about a potential kidney infection. If it was me, I would take a trip to the ER. They can help with a temporary catheter until they get in touch with your Urologist. The home care nurse told me after catheter removal following my TURP that if I couldn’t piss I should go straight to the ER. Don’t wait too long Dave. I hope this resolves well for you as soon as possible.
Dave, I too have had 2 Turps. At Mayo-Jacksonville last October, then last November in St Pete (lifted more than 10lbs prior to 6 weeks requiring the 2nd Turp-my fault).
I take a Cranberry extract capsule every morning, and a glass of unsweetened Cranberry juice for bladder health. All has been good for UTI’s now for 6 months. Had some scar tissue forming at tip of urethera causing super long distance stream of urine. They stretched it out through a Cystoscope procedure (I requested gen anesth because Im over unneccessary pain). All back to mostly normal last 3 weeks. I too am looking at Radiation (Bracchy Boost therapy of prostate + lymph nodes), or combo of prostetechtomy plus adjunctive radiation of gland + lymph nodes. PSA now down to 2.2 finally. Best to hit the PCa cells in sennescence (slumber) from all I have read. Attack the enemy heavy, at 3:15am while they are asleep, with everything!
I’m glad you got it sorted Dave. You had a lot going on there for a while. It’s not worth the risk of a kidney infection. That could finish you. Hope you sleep well after all of this pain and suffering. Stay healthy until they can bomb the beast with protons.
The labs from urine test last night show zero infection. Why the pain and blockage to piss? Now I am blaming the tumor. Waiting for Urology to get me in for further review.
This may get long. I have been having pissing problems for several years, so i have some suggestions.
After brachytherapy and IMRT I had occasional problems peeing and needed to self catheterize. A couple of times i had to go to the ER because I could not get a catheter in at all. Fortunately I was close to a competent hospital.
One time I was not as lucky and got the bitch cunt doctor from hell. I have no bias at all against women doctors, my primary is a woman and it is difficult to imagine finding a better doctor. Dr McCullough really impressed me by doing a DRE. She wanted to feel for herself.
Anyway the bitch doctor forced a foley cath into my weakened previously irradiated prostate) I made it really clear to her that she needed to be careful. Well she inflated the balloon in spite of my protest, screams in fact. I ended up ambulance driven to a better hospital where the on call Uro did a turp. I still have not recovered from that. My first urologist (moved) had told me to never get a turp or any other surgery unless absolutely necessary. The on call Uro is young and a very good doctor but not with the 400 years experience of my first Uro.
At this point I have a major bladder neck contracture. I was able to self cath for a couple of years but it became more and more difficult. I also began having frequent UITs. Once I could no longer self cath I tried to find a cath that I could use. I temporarily used a wire to stiffen the cath and could get one in. I live far from medical care and need to know that I can get my pee out if I need to. I have a bladder scanner for checking to see if i need to rush to the ER but that has not been necessary so far.
So I finally found a cath that I can get in. It is a Tieman tipped 14 french. The Tieman tip is slightly tapered and the material the cath is made of is a bit stiffer.
My urologist said that I should cath two to three times a day. He thinks that the frequent UTIs could be caused by incomplete voiding of bladder allow stagnation and ???
The final stray in peeing problems is when I have a UTI. I have somewhat painful urination all the time so it can be difficult to know when I have a UTI but the effect is that difficult peeing becomes even more difficult. I just bought the stuff necessary to do urinanalysis myself so I can go to town for lab work only when it is pretty sure i need it. So far I caught one UTI that was confirmed by the lab.
If you have had radiation to your prostate do not get a turp unless by a doctor who specializes in salvation after radiation and who thinks it is really necessary. Did you know that a TURP is a very crude procedure in which a sharp rotating cutting tool grinds your urethra and part of your prostate away and then it heals back to close (not in my case) to what it was with a catheter inserted after surgery.
Some tips. If a doctor or nurse is causing you pain and or you don't have confidence in what they are doing, get the fuck out of there. You can go some place else. Or if it is a larger facility you can ask for someone else. If this happened to me again that is what I would do and if they asked why I did not want the doctor to treat me I would tell them because she is a sadistic self impressed bitch and I deserve better.
Even if a nurse can not get a catheter in, the chances are that a URO can so an ER is often the best way to get help with urinary retention. Urologists have lots of experience with catheters and also use advanced techniques such as guide wires. Also if they can not get one in at all there is always the option of a supra pubic catheter that goes through the wall of your stomach.
I have more experience personally with urine retention than most people so i have a pretty good idea how much urine I am retaining but some times i am completely wrong. Pressing on you stomach above you bladder (look online to see charts of where it is) you can usually tell how full the bladder is. You do not want to build up excess pressure because it can cause kidney damage. If there is any doubt get to a Uro or the ER. Since I live 2 hours from an OK hospital and 5 hours from a good one, I use the bladder scanner occasionally just to know it works and to refresh my idea about bladder volume. Depending on time of day how much water was consumed and other factors, i have a figure in mind that would send me to the ER.
Last point. For some reason doctors have little problem prescribing catheters but are generally not good at or completely ignore teaching how to use one. It is pretty straight forward but there are several things a new catheter user should know and they are best demonstrated not described.
FYI, it's too late now, but when undergoing a TURP your surgeon should also do a Bladder Neck Expansion. Your bladder neck is like a funnel located just before the urethra. Expanding or widening it yields more room for flow. How do I know? After 2 unsuccessful TURPs, a new uro did the same TURPs but also a Bladder Neck Expansion. Bingo! I've been pissing fine for 19 years since.
