Have any of you on Zytiga and dexamethasone experienced sensitivity in your teeth? I get a three month injection of Xgeva, therefore am concerned about any dental problems that might creep up. Before my last shot of Xgeva I had to go to my dentist and have x-rays to make sure gum areas were clear. .Please reply if you have had the same problems being on Zytiga and dexamethasone or any other steroid.

Thank you for your help

Well what a coincidence,

I have recently been suffering with sensitive teeth, I also take Zytiga and predniselone every day and have been on this medication now for coming up for 3 years.

The teeth sensitivity has only occurred over the last twelve months so maybe related. I am due yo visit my dentist in the next few weeks so I will ask him.

It would be nice to know if the cause is from Zytiga, Xgeva or the steroid taken with Zytiga . Hopefully Xgeva is not the culprit, because I believe it is doing it’s job.

I had to be taken off of Xgeva due to it causing jaw bones to die. I have had oral surgery twice so far to remove dead bone. I think I'll be having a third surgery in about six months according to the surgeon. I dont know the benefits of getting monthly Xgeva shots were but the recovery from each surgery was definitely not worth it. Needless to say I'm not on it anymore and seem to be okay. I have since been advised by my Cancer doctor to double up on my Calcium supplement. Never give up Never surrender. Leo

Sorry to hear of that problem Leo. Pentoxiphyline (trental) plus vitamin E significantly aids healing of osteonecrosis of the jaw. Quick search will bring up the trials and discuss with your dentist. Good luck.

My understanding about Xgeva was that it will not cause jaw problems unless you have a dental procedure that involves the jaw bones. If a procedure if necessary you would have to be off Xgeva for a number of months prior to the procedure.I could be totally wrong but I understood that from my dentist and Onc.

On Z + D since Sept. 2020 (switch from P to D) and on X since Sept. 2016 diagnosis. While Xgeva has always had its negative side effects for me, I have noted increased experience with sensitivity and occasional ghost jaw ache since switching to D from P. But recent (significant) dental work w/ x-ray does not show any necrosis or density changes.

What I hate most about these type of side effects are how they overrun our body's natural warning systems so that we do not know how to interpret the signals. Arrgh.

Thank for your reply, hopefully Xgeva is not the culprit, it has helped me so far.

I have been taking Zytiga for many years. The major side effect is this intake blocks the production of cortisol and may lead to low blood potassium levels, fluid build-up, high blood pressure, and irregular heartbeats. But it affected my jaw bones and also affected my teeth in the form of sensitivity. I have discussed this with my dental expert: [ rootsonwhytedental.com ] and he told me that sensitivity is temporary and goes away on its own over the course of a few weeks. Also, he suggested using toothpaste made for sensitive teeth and advised using mouthguards during the night. Saltwater mouthwash and using soft brushes are also common remedies to get rid of sensitivity.
