Update and a question

Hi again team! Loving this group! Have a question- after speaking to another oncologist (will still get a more formal 2nd opinion at MD Anderson)- he suggested that my husband make sure he gets either a PMSA or an Azumin type of PET scan to properly evaluate his prostate cancer. Can anyone comment on this? Just read that Azumin PET scan is typically done for recurrent Pca... not what hubby has... FYI- we are delaying the chemo to wait for the 2nd opinion (could be about a month away)- will still start in Lupron. Thanks all!

Here's a good explanation about PET scans:

prostatecancer.news/2016/12...

You are right that Axumin is only approved for recurrent patients, but insurance will often cover it for patients newly diagnosed with metastases. Get pre-authorization because it is very expensive.

As I said in my last reply, I don't see how it will change any of his treatment decisions. The therapies I discussed were based on what was discovered in patients using bone scans/CT, so I think you should proceed with them regardless of what a PET scan shows.

Lupron will hold him just fine for now. Over time, it will shrink his metastases so they will not show up on PET scans. Although for a month or two, it will enhance the ability of a PSMA PET scan to reveal metastases.

My Oncologist has booked a PSMA scan to hopefully show where the cancer is hiding so it can be zapped with radiation as I am still trying to avoid the ADT & fatigue that goes with it.Good Luck To You.

No situation is the same I had a PSMA before radiation to determine if I ould get Proton or IMRT. My cancer had spread outside the capsule so the Rad-Onc. set me up with 38 sessions IMRT. I have been on Lupron/Zytiga/Prednisone since November 2019, and by staying active, riding bikes, swimming, and kettlebell I have not had too much problems. Just the regular lack of libido😅 good luck stay strong
