Like Nalakrats mentioned above, type of calcium supplement has to be chosen carefully. The best way to get calcium is thru dietary sources such as a daily cup of fat-free Yogurt.Drinking plenty of water throughout the day keeps calcium and oxalates in soluble state and helps to stop formation of stones.

Nalakrats, what is your opinion about use of Calcium Oxide, (slacked Lime) a water soluble calcium preparation. Calcium Oxide is used by millions of people in Asia who eat Betel Leaves and put a small amount of Calcium Oxide on betel leaves. (called Paan) I never heard this prep. causing kidney stones and these guys have strong bones . Besides chewing betel leaves with some calcium oxide ..they also do physical labor in bright Sun for hours. So all three good things for bones .(.Exercise+Calcium and vitamin D.)

Thank you very much, i asked because my father got high creatinine due to urinary blockage, he has been on catheter for months and creatinine was dropping as urine is consistently drained, although lately it seems creatinine drop was slowing down, he is on a plant based diet but ocasionally eats fish and chicken, also taking barley grass, chia, flax and cranberry with vitamun c, we are also seeing a urologist, integrative doctor and nutritionist on the coming days, i just wanted to know more insights about this

Kidney stone could be from vitamin C supplements. In conclusion, our results indicate that high-dose ascorbic acid supplements—one of the most commonly used vitamin preparations—are associated with a dose-dependent 2-fold increased risk of kidney stone formation among men.

Some men are just more prone to it. It's not from the seeds. As cancer progresses, clots form as nucleation sites for stones. If it gets really bad, they will put in a ureteral stent.

Hi Tall_Allen. Can you explain the urethral stent and if it works. I did read in some research that the stents can cause problems. I didnt go into it.

They keep the flow going from the kidney to the bladder when there is blockage. Of course it works- that's why they do it.

The web site nutritionfacts.org has information on the impact of various foods on the likelihood of developing kidney stones. The site has a good search facility; try searching for kidney stones.

Yes, most kidney stones are calcium oxalate, but about 20% are either uric acid or the magnesium phosphate mineral struvite. Uric acid stones form when the urine is persistently acidic and bacteria (kidney infection) are usually implicated in the formation of struvite stones. Either way, it's wise to avoid soft drinks containing phosphoric acid, such as colas. Probably not a bad idea anyhow. Drink water. Lots of water.
