What statins do you currently take and what dosage? Do any of you take statins to prevent recurrence specifically? I would like to know if there's a recommended dosage for repurposed use for PCA recurrence.

Statins
Nothing approved, some studies say maybe but nothing proven for statin use wrt prostate cancer
I'm certainly no fan of statins. Quite the opposite actually. However, from what I've read in the past, they have reported anti-inflammatory effects which may be helpful to some with PCa. So when people argue that point, I think it's actually a valid point to take into consideration.Statins are extremely powerful drugs. They affect a LOT of processes in your body and can have wide varying side effects as a result. Some people find the effects difficult to deal with.
You'll need to discuss with your med team what types and what dosage. I think it will be more trial and error for you than to actually go by what generally people take.
Hopefully you'll get the anti-inflammatory benefit with min side effects.
Crestor 10g.
Cholesterol is two steps behind Testosterone in the biological sequence. I have familial hypercholesterolemia and my T is sky high. 20 mg Atorvastatine + 10 mg Ezetimibe for me to keep lipids within normal levels.
Hi Justfor, my husband was on Atorvastatin 20mg for about 3 months but had major constipation issues with it. We are asking and researching to see which one he could try next. I read that Pravastatin has less SE potentially.
I take Crestor 5mg. M-W-F to lower my T. (by 10-20%) as a result of lowering Cholesterol. Hoping it may have some impact on my BCR enhancing nodule in prostate bed. It also gives me nice lipid profile.
atorvastin 10mg and it did the job required for my LDL, no side effects that I have noticed. Cheap.
atorvastin 10mg. I read some study (cant recall which one) that showed atorvastin with metformin together (but neither alone) showed a PC advantage. I do both
Schwah
be careful if you take darolutamide, it makes atorvastatin more bio available, so any dosage should take that into account
The book How to Starve Cancer has some details about statins. I take red rice yeast which is a natural statin and much safer.
I have familial hypercholesterolemia also and take 20mg Rosuvostatin daily. No side effects. If it has any positive effect beyond the intended purpose that’s wonderful. Any recommended dosage for BCR prevention is conjecture.
You didn’t ask for opinions about their use, but of course you’ll get plenty. The only one of mine I’ll bother to share is this: CVD kills at least 400,000 men annually in the US, Pca around 33,000. Additionally, CV issues are known to be strongly associated with ADT, which most advanced disease patients are on for life.
The effect of statins on lipids is proven.
I take 40mg Rosuvastatin for cholesterol as per Cardiologist recommendation. Not taking it for PC. Side effects .... nil.
Statins are wonder drugs for most who do not have adverse side effects. Others may need to try different ones in hopes of finding one well tolerated. They can halt the progress of atherosclerosis and even reverse it. Rewriting the risk from our #1 killer ASCVD. In addition the have significant anti-inflammatory effects, one of the two main drivers of the progression of cancer including prostate cancer. Dose should be the maximum tolerated without side effects. I take 80mg of atorvastatin (Lipitor) nightly. For Crestor it would be 40mg. Acetyl Coenzyme Q (Ubiquinol) may protect against muscular adverse side effects though there is controversial opinions on this. Take a statin at high dose, live long and prosper. MB
I always used to enjoy your comments on Bat treatment... haven't seen any lately ? are they banned on this site now?
Not banned so far. I am continuing my modified long cycle BAT program continues to work for me. PSA is undetectable. And I very much enjoy and benefit from the high testosterone periods. It does a man’s body good, as long as it is keeping PCa in check. Paul
I take 80mg Avtorvastatin daily (and other Meds ) as prescribed by my Cardiologist.
I experienced two side effects, 1- serious fatigue , 2- Sleep disruption. I took a supplement CO-Q10 UBIQUINOL for the fatigue and it worked ...thanks poster GSDF! I took Melatonin for the sleep issue worked for a few weeks, I switched to Mirtazapine and doing well on that. My Cholesterol is well under control. I am not aware of any effects on my APCa.
my husband takes 80 mg atorvastatin daily. No side effects.
Hi hansjd, thanks. How long has he been taking it and did he start at 80mg? Also was it prescribed for cholesterol control?
He was on a lower dose for some years before Dx, for somewhat elevated cholesterol, but it was upped to 80 mg/ day to help with PC. Been at that dosage for about 5 years. Cholesterol levels are good, of course, and 6 1/2 years since Dx. See bio. As I said before no adverse side effects. Cheers.
For cholesterol, not PCa, I take 5 mg Crestor (rovuvastatin). Before that I took 20 mg Zocor (simvastatin). No side effects from either.
Hi vintage42, thanks. Why did you end up switching?
Switching... I had 3 unwitnessed, heavily tested, undiagnosed pass outs in 3 years. I considered them seizures, but nothing could be done. My primary care theorized my Simvastatin was crossing the blood brain barrier to do this, and switched me to Rosuvastatin which does not. It has now been almost 2 years since the last episode.
This also figured in my choice of 2nd Gen ADT. My urologist wanted to use Apalutamide, but its trials excluded people with seizure history. So I chose Abiratirone.
I'm glad to hear your PCP thought of switching. Sounds like it was the right thing to do. I hope that resolves the seizures.
40mg of rosuvastatin. I take it for heart issues. 3 heart attacks in the last 12 years
i was on crestor when i started my nubeqa it had a bad reaction to where i couldn’t walk for about a month until they took me off the crestor now my cholesterol is great from changing to only whole foods chicken and fish.
as per Jane McLelland and numerous articles, I was taking Lovistatin for about a year. Also, got into seriously good shape via HIIT sprint swimming 3x per week and walking 8000 steps a day. Began to notice very low heart rate of 38 BPM during sleep, as per my Apple Watch . Low heart rate is common with elite athletes, particularly swimmers , but maybe too much with statin, so I dropped it and less very low heart rate results. I was also doing 8/16 intermittent fasting and have backed off that. Will consider adding back Red Rice in a few weeks
Brand name Lipitor 20mg daily for me - have been taking it for approximately the last 15 years.
I've been taking Atorvastatin (generic Lipitor) at 10mg for 15 years now with zero side effects. The docs have been blown away by how good my cholesterol numbers are. But that's also due to a low-carb diet.
the risk of heart attack goes up dramatically on antitestosterone therapy. When I was first put on therapy I was sent to a cardiologist who specializes in this issue. I am taking Lipitor with the goal of getting my LDL below 75. I have had no side effects. My calcium score was 250 so I had some risk before therapy.
Cardiologist like to keep my total cholesterol below 200
40mg Atorvastatin and 10mg Ezetimibe...
Labs in June:
Total Cholesterol -186
Triglycerides -31
LDL - 78
HDL - 99
Sie effects, zero
If you haven't already done so, you may take a color genetic test. Your numbers are compatible with familial hypecholisterolemia.
Yeah, my cardiologist and primary care doctor more or less said so...given my lifestyle where I lead an active life, hiking in the mountains, skiing, riding my bike, swimming, lifting weights...my youngest daughter, turning 29 next months, had her labs come back, I said, welcome to the club...it's not lifestyle...!
This is the study...
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...
that convinced my GP to put me on atorvastatin (20 mg) and metformin (500 mg). No side effects that I've noticed. But can't be sure it's helped much. After RARP (2016 ), SRT with 6 mo ADT (2018), SBRT (2022), I'm now now undectable (🤞 ) on Eligard and Erleada.
I take Rosuvastatin 20 mg. Had a heart valve replaced long before my Pca. Cardiologist wanted my cholesterol low. Had cramping from Simvastatin. No SE’s anymore. Recently went from 10-20 mg. No mention from anyone about it helping Pca.
I've been on avortastatin 40mg for at least 7 years due to high cholesterol. No noticeable side effects, however my wife claims it affects my cognition. I don't notice the cognitive affects. My sleep is not good and I attribute that to the adt and PC. I also take coq10 to combat any cognition effects.
When diagnosed in 2017 all my blood work was out of whack! Cholesterol, Triglycerides, Glucose, etc. Been on Statins since. Rosuvastatin 20mg daily until started Daro and had a reaction, dropped to 5mg then back up to 10mg daily. Cholesterols (all) are so low I need to figure how to raise them a bit, lol... Otherwise no noticed issues.
Causation and Association are two difficult things to differentiate in regard to Statins effect upon the mechanisms of action with PCa. But if it doesn't hurt why not! Lol... Personally I believe it helps, without going into the why's but basically that PCa is known to depend upon proteins and lipids vs glucose as vehicles driving it along.
Good Luck & Best Regards
I take 40mg of Rosuvastatin per day and 10mg of Zetia per day for my high hyperlipidemia. I had a triple bypass a little over a year ago. That's actually what got my PCa noticed.
I take 40 mg Crestor. Cognitive issues over time. Started when I was 49 now 62. Pca at 53. No dementia but definitive cognitive decline over time. Without it I wouldn’t be here I’m certain of that. Ran 5km minimum Mon to Fri for years and started to feel fatigue during my runs. That led to heart issue being discovered. 99% blockage. I ate no butter few eggs little red meat and vegetarian meals at least two to three times a week.
recommend reading Duane Graveline’s books on statins.
My cholesterol was in the "okay" range but with ADT, it crept into the area of concern. I take Atorvastatin 10 mg and now everything shows very good.
In remission with PCa since 2018. Had surgery and radiation. I was on 20 mg atorvastatin for 10 years up until recently. No noticeable side effects. Was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy last year and elected to try dropping atorvastatin down to 10. Blood work since still looks good. High statin intake can affect PN from what I read. Has anyone also seen this??
Just know high dose Rosuvastatin, 80mg is really not good for anyone. My wife's cardiologist did not know about this study, but docs today are too busy working for the hedge fund owners in the group to have time to research. Always do your own. He had no problem switching her when I sent this to him.
I take 45mg generic Crestor but not for prostate cancer, for what it's intended. Works well for me.
Statins are extremely dangerous IMO.
Taking 10 mg of Lipitor for only 1 week caused permanent neuropathy in my feet and plunged me into 2.5 years of chronic fatigue syndrome, not to mention the common myalgia associated with statins. Side effects can be delayed by months and years which is why they are often not blamed for any ASEs your having. Side effects often do not go away even after stopping Statins and may even progress. Of course, everyone’s reaction is different but unless there is absolute proof there is significant benefit, why take the risk?
OK! I am confused about taking statins for PC. For those of you who take statins for helping with PC, what do statins do to help with the cancer? Obviously this is an off label use or maybe not?
I have been on statins for probably 30 years and still have PC.
Like someone above mentioned it was not a poor life style that caused me to go on statins. I just could not control mine with diet and exercise. It has been superb for 30 years on statins. I am down to 20 mg of generic Lipitor each day. Started at 40 mg dose.
From what I read cholesterol is a precursor to androgen production and statins also have anti-inflammatory effects
I've been taking HCF Cholesterol brand of Red Yeast Rice (the brand recommended by Consumer Lab for its high station content), 1-2 caps per day, for 4 years.
Rosuvastatin 5mg for cholesterol started two months ago. So far so good.
