You could file for social security disability. However your income will be capped. I believe the government expects you not to work. I am working on by application as I just retired at 60 and am also stage 4.

Much depends on your income and whether you have Medicare. Each state has a Medicare Assistance Program with different financial guidelines that can help with drug payments. Combined Medicaid/Medicare programs can pay health care costs. Sometimes a state will have a 'spend down' that can qualify an individual for assistance. Also, request assistance from your hospital, clinic, medical group, drug company. Many have income based pricing but you won't know unless you ask. If your treatment center or group has a counselor, social worker, or patient navigator request their assistance. Sometimes a senior center or service group will have a very knowledgeable volunteer. Often finding financial assistance, either in lower costs or direct payments, will help more than a small and perhaps unreliable rise in income. Consider finding the programs and services that are meant to help as a job, a very important one, in itself and that you are worth the time and effort.

I was a network administrator and retired at age 60 and took a job as a consultant until my wife turned 62. We both then retired completely and took early Social Security. It all worked out quite well.

Well...depends on how much money you have set aside...I'm trading options.

I have several holdings and I'll sell a long dated covered call (min 6mo out) and then sell cash covered puts each month. I'm pretty conservative but last year I generated over 2k on one holding ( cost basis was $980). looking to expand this year to 2 holdings.

We do the same thing. Extremely profitable.

I would imagine not many on this site could imagine the monthly/yearly income that can be generated off a paltry amount of stock Holdings.

Well Rosebud. I too am 6 years in with stage #4 this March . I’ve been on ssdi this entire time .Due to mets on bladder and two years with tubes bags and stents . Broke with no other source . This has given us a view of austerity . A great lesson . I hope that you find the resources that you need🙏

Online will be your best bet. Both eBay and Facebook marketplace and craigslist. But if you sell in person meet someplace safe. I like police station parking lots or Walmart parking lots where everything is on camera. It seems daunting but eBay walks you through it now. And if you use priority mail they will pick it up at your house—you don’t have to go to the post office.I find plenty of things at estate sales and even local Goodwill‘s and thrift stores that I make decent money on. Or just sell the stuff in your house. Amazing what some things go for.

I retired at 61, got PC at 62, had a retirement plan, got social security at 62, got mPC at 66, and have tried writing books, selling antiques, managed real estate, and trading stocks. I have to say nothing much came of any of it until this year. I'm now 75. Suddenly this past year the pandemic or my seizure with insomnia a year ago transformed my stock picking ability. All I can tell you is don't listen to anyone else, check in the market early in the morning to see what is moving, buy low and sell high. All there is to it.😅

Yes I have to admit it has been good and bad, up and down. Past year was good after several years bad. It seems to be a matter of personal strategy vs. the market. It's hard to tell what my problem was but I tend to double-down and that leads to trouble some times. I remembeer one bit of advice that seems good..."Bellieve".

This may sound simplistic but it may help to sit down with yellow pad and pen and draw buckets that represent the different sources of your income production. Take inventory of your guaranteed income buckets and set them aside. Take the buckets that are low, deficient, or even non existent and start to develop a “plan” on how to build them up to levels that can produce income. Think of crab nets sitting on the ocean floor “soaking”.

I suggest you focus on individual stocks and in particular stocks that represent what is working in our modern economy. Stay away from the news headline stocks as they will burn you. Say you have $10,000.00 to start with. I’d suggest $2,000.00 invested into five different companies. Five good starter names would be Amazon, Shopify, Nvidia, Disney, and maybe Etsy or Pinterest. You could do no wrong looking into health care and energy names like Bio Techne, Guardiant, and Clean Energy. Let them go for at least 3-5 years even in spite of Pca diagnosis.

You can set an online brokerage account with an Ameritrade or Etrade account.

I wish you well.....

I have a different plan then stocks. That is working out pretty well. I try to keep it low key. I've done it all literally we would run out of 0's and 1' lol. I love helping others, and teaching but not so much baby sitting. creating

My stock picks were basically duds until I signed up with motley fool. Since then I've done well. Of course we are in a bull market that no one understands. Might keep going. Might crash.

When markets are going up, as has been the case recently, then every stock and options picker is a genius. A rising tide lifts all boats. Then one day the tide goes out. Be cautious with your savings. Invest but diversify broadly. Options trading is pure gambling. Zero sum. That said, biotechnology and healthcare is looking strong going forward. Try to stick with what you know best and keep it close to home.

in reply to MateoBeach

Why would you say options is pure gambling? Not all option trading is gambling. In fact...it's very smart investing,if done properly.

Here is an example...let's say I want buy a stock but I feel the current price is too high...I can sell a cash covered put option at the nearest option strike price to my desired entry price. If my option is exercised, I get to purchase my stock at my desired price and the actual cost basis is lower because of the per stock premium I received. ...if not exercised (ie option expires) .I get to keep the premium for selling the option and then I can sell another option and do it again...over and over and over...until I get my stock at the price I desire all the while collection premiums...

If I'm worried that bottom could fall out of the stock..I purchase a put option at a lower strike price that protects my downside.

There are plenty of strategies for options trading that minimize risk dramatically...including protecting the underlying portfolio from catastrophic declines.

It's not for everyone but for those that have the desire and the aptitude for it, it's worth it.

Good luck. I’ve seen it all play out over decades and multiple cycles. Just Trying to discourage unsophisticated traders from naked options trading. Your knowledge for covered options is certainly more sound.

in reply to MateoBeach

An actual example last year is I bought a speculative biotech at .60 a share...1000 shares. As the rising tide lifted all boats i sold 9 7.50 jan 2021 covered calls for 1.20/share. That was in June 2020. I bought them back for .05 share 3 months later. I pocketed nearly $900 on that trade. I then took a position in another stock I wanted.

As I stated in an earlier post I'm conservative with my investments and I take profits and I don't let greed cloud my judgment.

Agree with your naked options comment..quick way to the poor house.

The financial literacy in this country is very poor. One does not need to be a rocket scientist to invest...most of the knowledge was learned by the 8th grade.

Options or stocks?

4Rosebud profile image
4Rosebud in reply to

well these are inexpesive stocks now that will be worth fortunes with small investments although you may find optionsI'm very fimaliar with trading options I have. stocks are expensive. options cheap, more control over larger chunks for less covering puts and calls has its place and going long on a new stock with no down side profit potential you could call a long term prospect but the upside is enormous

in reply to 4Rosebud

Your original post was asking for ways to generate additional income. If you are decent investor and have a few sheckles. Options could be a viable approach to generating the additional income without losing your shirt.

4Rosebud profile image
4Rosebud

Absolutely I love options and it can be done with very little and great level. I love reading charts and all that but cancer took away my shecles mate...lol

in reply to 4Rosebud

understand...but...when the sheckels return and they will because you have a good head attached to that neck, you know how to make additional money.

I just executed a long call today so you know I'm not just blowing smoke

I do this thru Robinhood.

You submitted a limit order to sell 1 contract of OPK $7.00 Call 6/18 at $0.75 per contract

Your limit order to sell 1 contract of OPK $7.00 Call 6/18 executed at an average price of $75.00 for a total of $75.00 on February 9th, 2021 at 10:22 AM.

Now I'll start selling $5. strike price puts at least monthly. This stock has weekly options so I'll try to maximize my income looking at the various options. Due to time degrading the weekly might not be the best approach.

Alternatively, I can offer online games that payout real cash. A close friend of mine is in a similar situation but earns from home 6-7 thousand dollars a month since this work does not require more than 4-5 hours a day.
