Why do you think it's good?

in reply toTall_Allen

I don't know. Hence the "good or bad?".

Possibly protective against cancer if you don't have it. Perhaps not as good once you have it. But perhaps still ok in pharmaceutical doses (some anti-oxs become pro-ox).

But I don't know and the only clinical trials that I have seen haven't used doses large enough to be pro-ox. Do you know of any?

No. I was asking because I have not seen any evidence that they are protective. I was wondering why you even asked the question.

I enjoy listening to opinions even if I disagree. I can't even count the number of times in my life that I have been convinced of something, only to come to the realization that I was wrong (unless I was wrong to be wrong). What is the stat: something like 7% of whatever scientists think that they know is proven wrong within ten years. Probabilities can help us but it is rare to see a p-value of 0.0 unless perhaps the outputs are digital.

This is an interesting article and claims that large clinical trials can be correct up to 85% of the time (if the hypothesis is 50/50). On average, small ones only have a 1 in 4 chance of being correct. But, is this conclusion correct?

Hypotheses are based on observation.

in reply toTall_Allen

Sometimes but not always. I used to be a medical engineer and I frequently had to come up with design hypotheses without any observed data. However, I did have observations and rules of electron activity to go on; so I guess that in a way I did have some observations. But in a complex design, it seems laughable to point to electron activity observation in base materials as the idea for your design hypothesis.

Or maybe you are right and this is yet another example of the scientists being wrong? Lol!

Anti Oxidants coming from natural sources such as fresh veggies, fruits, roots and leaves are good. I am not fan of pills or capsules of anti oxidants due to possibility of contaminants and harmful chemicals in them.

in reply toLearnAll

I hear you about the contaminants. I try to get my nutrition from real food whenever possible. I grow my own sprouts.

A quote from a study I was reading today....."Antioxidants protect cellular structures against the processes of degeneration resulting from pollution, aging process, cancerous changes in cells and other adverse influences."

In simple words...Anti Oxidants prevent normal cells from becoming cancerous cells.. They also regulate immune system which effectively kills cancerous cells and keep the body in good, healthy condition.

Antioxidants such as carotenoids, polyphenols, flavonoids etc. from natural dietary sources do help in fight against cancer. If the supplements are simply capsules filled with natural powders and minimum or no other ingredients, they also can be used, I use mushroom complex capsules because it is practically hard to find and eat all 4 types of mushrooms daily. (Reishi, Turkey tail, maitaki and shaitagi )

Yes, exactly (both). Best intelligent read on the topic for me was Nick Lane’s “Oxygen the Molecule that Made the World”. Antioxidant mechanisms and paradox explanations begin in Chapter 9 through end of book. Though the entire book is fascinating.

Right now I am on alpha lipoid acid and l-carnitine to try to protect my cells and DNA from further genetic degradation by my old ROS leaky mitochondria. Hope springs eternal even though we are not.

Best antidote to despair is to keep learning more.

Thanks. Good attitude. One of my mottos is "keep on keeping on". I'm ordering that book. Looks good.

Just a comment that may or not not be appropriate. Sixteen years ago I was in a six month chemotherapy and hormone therapy clinical trial. The watch word was no anti-oxidants. In fact, “no supplements if any type, unless I approve.” The concern was interaction...... I do not know if the use of anti-oxidants or any other supplement was bad during my treatment or would tend to skew data. In either case, I followed my research medical oncologist’s instructions to the letter.
