Xgeva Shot IM or SubQ

My husband has been getting his Xgeva as a monthly intramuscular injection. I just looked at the prescribing info today and it says "Xgeva is intended for subcutaneous route only and should not be administered intravenously, intramuscularly, or intradermally."

Does anyone else get their Xgeva as an IM injection?

Wow

Are you sure that's not his ADT shot that he's getting in his muscle? Lupron for example, is injected into the muscle while Xgeva should not as you said.

Positive. He gets Trelsrar every 3 months for ADT, also as an IM.

The method of subcutaneous injection and other information is right on the package insert. Hard to imagine how they could get that wrong.

From the package insert:

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION-----------------------

Xgeva is intended for subcutaneous route only and should not be administered intravenously, intramuscularly, or intradermally. (2.1)

He might be getting more muscle irritation and pain by the IM route. I prefer this injection in the fat in the triceps area.

Thanks for the response. He gets it deep in the deltoid, doesn't have any pain or irritation, but we happened to notice the indication is for subq only.

Pretty sure my is sub-q b/c the nurse grabs some fat in the shoulder area before injecting. Next time you are at the Doc just ask. In fact just call tomorrow.

To put it in simple term I get my monthly Xgeva shot in my lower stomach area the nurse injects it going on a sideways slant.

Hey, Shanti. As always, a great observation.

GoBucks is dead on - my nurse uses a pinching technique for my administration.

Let us know what you find out!

Hi Everyone- thank you for the replies. I can't help but think the nurse simply made an error, was on autopilot or something. She definitely did his last Xgeva injection as an IM so I have reached out to the doctor's office.

My husband just told me that he remembers getting the subQ before, so maybe it was just this one.
