Good afternoon all! Hope everyone is starting to enjoy the sunshine and improved weather.
Quick question: I just received latest blood results from my primary physician and my triglycerides are off the chart at 445. I have my monthly oncologist appointment tomorrow but was curious if this rise can be attributed to prednisone? I’m walking and exercising daily and getting skinny with exception of this beer gut that seems to keep adding on fat.
Thanks in advance for your consideration of responses. Dave

Long term use of prednisone is known to increase body fat ..particularly with "moon face" and "buffalo hump" .(terms used to describe steroid induced obesity)
Trigycerides are nothing but tiny droplets of fat floating in a man's blood. Increase in triglycerides are mostly due to high fat/oil in diet or low level of physical exercise.
Triglycerids can be easily reduced by (1) Daily higher level of exercise (2) Daily dose of Garlic. Besides other anti cholesterol meds such as Niacin or Statins can also lower triglycerides. Discuss this with your doctor what he prefers to lower triglycerides.
If you are taking the small amount of prednisone required to replace what is lost when taking Zytiga, it is not the prednisone. However, it may be the Zytiga. High blood cholesterol and triglycerides is a known and very common side effect of Zytiga. Hypertriglyceridemia was found in 63% in men taking Zytiga.
Zytiga is real culprit. When I was on Zytiga, my blood pressure shot up in the range of 190/120 and I was put on 3 meds to control it. It came down back to 130/90 after stopping Zytiga and I need only one med now.
Zytiga raised my blood sugar too. I never had high blood sugar in my life. It raised my HbA1c to 6.1 . After stopping Zytiga, now I have HbA1C 5.8 again.
Consult with you internal medicine doctor about reducing intake of sugar and carbohydrates (no potatoes, bread, pasta , pizza etc and all other products with occult sugars. Check nutrition labels) . With your level of triglycerides you could qualify to be treated with Lovaza
I get labs done every month. I have outlier results in several measurements from time to time. Triglycerides were one of the things that spiked in one test and were back to normal a short time later. My Dr. and I talk about this. We will not make decisions based on one test.
Also, I have a theory (not tested) that my measurements are sometimes affected by
Hydration. I have been inconsistent about maintaining levels of hydration. I now measure my intake. My observation is hydration is very important and often overlooked by me.
Inadvertently hit send. Sorry for the broken reply.
Took Lupron. Triglycerides skyrocketed to 349. Was dieting. Was exercising. Who knows? Honestly, any change in body, feelings, cognitive functioning, joint pain, genital atrophy, blood work that I cannot easily explain...I blame on Lupron/low T.
Btw, triglycerides dropped 200 points the next reading. Methinks, lab error. It happens.
