Starting Prolia, any advice?

Today after a Dexa scan my urologist and oncology nurse recommended Prolia to treat osteopenia. Does anyone have personal experience with this medication? Ive read some not so good reviews concernig the se's. My oncology nurse said that my younger age (53) would play well in deterring some of the side effects.

Thoughts?

There are no significant side effects, except with prolonged use. Be sure to monitor blood calcium and Vitamin D levels while taking it to make sure they stay in normal range.

You may know this already, but many (most?) of the worst symptoms or side effects of your ADT "disease" of hypogonadism are not just from lower T levels directly, but from the lower estrogen levels that indirectly result from lower T.

I have heard of low-dose trandermal estrogen being used, either with the other bone-loss meds or instead of them to address ADT bone issues. Have you are your docs considered or discussed this? Personally, I would prefer that route because the estrogen might help with OTHER problems caused by lower estrogen levels, too.

I have heard that patch or gel estrogen is far safer than oral, but is also harder to dose with high specificity. But seems like getting "just a little" may be beneficial?

Hello,

I have been on Prolia for seven years with no significant side effects. Tell your dentist. There is a small percentage (less than 2%) who might get osteonecrosis of the jaw. You don't want that to happen! It is probably a wise idea to have extractions, root canals etc. done prior to beginning Prolia. My oncologist feels Prolia is safer than Zometa (zoledronic acid) because you don't have to monitor kidney function quite so often. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the feedback! A dentist appt. has already been made.

Everyone responds differently to xgeva (Prolia). I h have been on it for over a year, no side effects.

Husband (an energetic 73 years old) started Xgeva about two months ago. So far no side effects. Hoping that continues.

Great news Barbara.

My MO started me on Prolia just over a year ago. I lost 15% bone density my first year with double adt and 8 weeks imrt. Then I’ve been losing 5% each year . I was unable to work or lift more than ten pounds for a yr and a half . Due to tubes out of my kidneys and a Foley.. In the first two years I lost all muscle and much bone . Like you , I read bad press about side effects of prolia. I want crazy about more pharma . I was in great joint pain especially in my hips. I got a lot of neuropathy pains from that time with constant UTI’ s and strong antibiotic overuse. I started bone nutrients at the same time as Prolia. Just over a year ago.. My pains were lessened. Don’t know why? Be proactive on exercise , bone and heart health .. I’m told that I will get two more six month shots , that’s it. Good luck 🍀

Scott, did they say why you will only be doing 2-years of Prolia?

What RyderLake2 said. I have been on Prolia for less time (~1.5 yrs), but have suffered no side effects beyond what ADT was already causing. I had my last 2 wisdom teeth (yes, I still had some) extracted before starting Prolia.
