Found cancer by TURP

My husband of 40plus years had a TURP performed on him in Dec 2019. We had already suspected cancer and he was told he has aggressive prostate cancer, Gleason score 9. He is 91 and the Dr thinks Lupron every 3 months is how he should treat the cancer. He has given him 2 to 5 years because of his age. The TURP helped his urine problems greatly. He has had 2 shots and his PSA went from 100.2 to normal range. He has no side effects. We are not sexually active, so this isn’t an issue. He never complains and is a joy to be around. My first time to post.

Kindness and compassion are the only answers to Pc. I too was stage #4 non op. Did 8 wks imrt and double adt . This has put me in remission over four years now. I’m still taking the test drug tak -700 and feeling many side effects of total castration and no T. I’m now 59 next month. Keep yourself up and healthy ... Many prayers for peace 🙏

For many lucky people (if a person with G-9 pca can be considered lucky) Lupron is all they need. Best of luck to you.

John Why would you make such a recommendation ? The 2 to 5 yrs prognosis is with Lupron I am sure. So you'd have him die sooner ? If the side effects are tolerable whey would one ever pass on an extra 5 yrs of life ? I am puzzled. Please explain your reasoning. Thanks.

I believe what 'j-o-h-n' is saying is at 91 her husband most likely will not die of PCa.

He also is wishing him another "9 comfortable years" even if he does nothing!

I am confused. The booklet the Dr gave us indicated that a Gleason score of 9, your cancer is likely to spread very quickly. I thought the Nupron is given to halt the cancer, but not cure the cancer. Am I wrong?

Yes, with Gleason 9 & at age 91, I think that Lupron monotherapy is what I would do.

Best to both of you: -Patrick

Sounds like a good strategy. I hope it works well for him.

Think about using estradiol patches instead of Lupron; much easier on the body and at 91 he’ll appreciate it.

Isn’t estradiol patches in the investigative stage?

The PATCH study is supposed to resolve the question as to which is better: classic ADT or ADT via high-dose estradiol patches.

Men who have switched to the patch - & survived - tend to be big fans of it.

Yes the PATCH trial in the UK has been going on for many years and there's an arm of the STAMPEDE trial going on. You don't need to be a member of a trial since off label use is approved. I've been on the patches since Feb 2019 to get rid of the nasty side effects of lhrh agonists like lupron. It's worked well for me and many others. In fact my urologist switched all his patients on to estradiol patches. Cheaper and easy to use and better for your bones. The dose is very low: .1mg per patch and I use three one week patches.

in reply toBreak60

Just curious. Is there a gynecomastia penalty to go with patches, as there is with ADT (lupron, eligard, etc)?

See this ctu.mrc.ac.uk/media/1282/c-...

Gynecomastia is the only side effect (except of course no sex life ) but it declines over time. But no sweats, bone and joint pain, weakness, brain fog, osteoporosis. Etc

Looks like this would be well worth researching.

I'm not even going to try to give your husband advice. At 91, he should be giving us advice. A lot of us here are Gleason 9. And most of us complain a lot. Sounds like you picked a winner! Best of wishes to both of you.
