Nightime Incontinence

Had prostate surgery back in Feb. NEVER incontinent at night. Took me 8 months to be 95% continent during the day which I was ok with (I guess). Started SRT and about 4 weeks in, I started to leak a little while sleeping AND I lost some of my daytime continence. Now, 6 weeks after finishing Radiation, I am back to where I was during the day, but my night time incontinence seems to be worsening. I can go 3-4 nights without any leakage and then like last night, drench the bed like a 5 year old. I felt like crying like one also. This was the worst episode. Since my daytime incontinence has improved post SRT, I was hoping my night time would too.

Anyone else experience this situation and did the the night time leakage get better over time? I just love this disease. :(

I am seeing my RO tomorrow for 6 week followup.

Thanks guys.

Yeah, unfortunately it's fairly common after SRT. Hopefully, it will diminish over the next few months. Try restricting fluids at night, no caffeine, alcohol, or fruit juices.

My incontinence took close to a year to be completely resolved after SRT. After 3 months there was marked improvement. I still had the night time accidents as you referenced above. Its hard..no pun intended. You can’t help but feel like a 5 year old. I run and exercise alot. I found that helped with my incontinence. Been there brother, stay positive and it will get better! Hope the best for you!

I always use a pad ("male guard"), 24/7. Most days I do with one pad all day, but sometimes if I have a drink after 8 p.m. I may have some leakage at night. I recommend that you start using them. Perhaps over time things will get better. Watch liquid intake after 7 p.m.

I don't normally need a pad now unless I am playing softball or going on a strenuous hike. Did my bowling league and gym workout today while staying dry.

Nightime is a different issue. Wiil be using a pad. A big pad after last night! Thanks for the advice.

I double-up (Depends plus a pad) when I plan on a lot of walking on a vacation, that sort of thing.

Yes, my incontinence got much worse after SRT, both day and night. My nighttime incontinence cleared up completely about 5 months after SRT, and my daytime incontinence is improving again. I’m hoping the worst of the damage from the radiation is over, now that I am 6 months post SRT. But everyone is different.

Glad to hear it did clear up. Good luck with your daytime issue. Yes, everyone is different.

Not a surprise. I peed the bed night before last. First time in a half-year. Have not had more than RP but the effects of SRT are similar. Keep up with Kegels. I bought some fabric at a fabric store, a layer of vinyl between two layers of flannel. Washable. I put it under the mattress pad to protect the mattress. Sheets and mattress pads are washable, mattresses are not.

Yes. We found that out yesterday. Our bed has a foam pad wrapped in a thick fabric above the main mattress. We took off the covering and washed it. It gave off enough fluff to make a couple of teddy bears. Shrunk about 18" in every direction. Only funny think about the entire episode!

Ya know: you have to put humor into this whole thing.

You need a strong pad under your sheets....Wear Depends.... set your alarm to wake you up during the night to urinate. Hug those teddy bears..........

Good Luck, Good Health and Good Humor.
