Supplement Report

Closing in on 1 year post-HIFU, my PSA was rising and I hoped against hope to be able to avoid the side-effects of treatment with radiation and/or ADT. I decided to try to reduce inflamation by cutting out refined sugar, adding turmeric/curcumin and quercetin/nettle supplements plus Nalakrats' baking soda/moleasses trojan horse cocktail. Here's what happened:

1. I started losing weight at the rate of 1 lb/week, about 10% of my body weight, stabilizing to BMI just under 20 & remaining there comfortably. Feel great; much easier to climb hills on my bicycle.

2. My total cholesterol went down 20 points with my "good" cholesterol staying high.

3. The fungus in my toenails improved.

4. The arthritis in almost all my joints (shown by the bone scan) has remained quiet with no pain.

5. Alas, my PSA continued to rise. MRI targeted biopsy showed 3 cores of <5% Gleason 8 cancer in the area previously treated with HIFU. Finished salvage radiation of 25 fractions to pelvic lymph nodes and 18 fractions boost to the postate (1.8 Gy each) on Oct 18. Bladder, bowel and erectile functions not the same but all improving.

Thanks to everyone who posted about anti-inflammatories. Summary: very beneficial but didn't cure my prostate cancer!

Best to all!

Mr Safety

Hey mistersafety!

I'm not saying it will work for everyone, but use your search bar and read about Dr. Ruth Heidrich. She was a runner. Diagnosed with breast cancer, she had surgery, a couple metastases on ribs, didn't have radiation or chemo, became a vegan and continued running. Within a year the metastases disappeared.

What I think she had going for her was a positive attitude. Where one is mentally can make a difference. When diagnosed she rallied herself mentally and focused on living.

Personal trainers use a term, "Form Follows Function". The meaning is that your body has the ability to adapt to meet the challenges it faces. In Heidrich's case she was a runner. Reading about her, things began to come together. Her husband wasn't supportive of the changes she was making in her life and diet to do the things that she believed, would rid her of her cancer. Belief in something is a powerful force not to be denigrated. The problem with using belief as a force for healing is the doubts that we all have and are subject to by those in our lives. As a distance runner she released endorphins and importantly, had time alone to think while running without negative input. I feel the time she spent while doing her daily runs was time when she strengthened her will to live. It was a time to think, for soul searching. How does "Form Follow Function" fit into this? Those who use a bike for cardio or an elliptical miss the small shocks that are transmitted through the skeletal system when a runner's foot hits the surface they are running on. Their bodies don't deposit the amount of minerals in their bones that a runner's body does. It stands to reason that a runner also stimulates their immune system, the marrow at the center of their bones. I had a conversation with my oncologist about Heidrich. I mentioned "Form Follows Function". That one's immune system begins in the marrow. The reason for marrow transplants is when a person's immune system is no longer functioning. Our immune system starts in our bone marrow. Was it possible that the diet change and running cleaned up and stimulated her immune system. My oncologist was in agreement about he immune system and neither of us could say this wasn't possible.

She made drastic changes to her diet but also had the strong belief that it would cure her. Negative influences in her life had to be eliminated. She left and divorced her husband who was not at all supportive of her diet and had little empathy to her plight and her desire to make changes to live! She told a story of making pancakes. Eggs and milk wouldn't be ingredients of a vegan pancake and the pancakes were flat and rubbery rather than fluffy. The pancakes weren't well received by her husband nor were the changes she was making in an effort to stay alive.

Within a year the metastases were no longer able to be found by imaging. She has run marathons here and there, become a triathlete. A link with the lead in to the article is below.

"In today’s podcast I talk to Dr. Ruth Heidrich, who’s run more than 60 marathons and triathlons and taken home more than 1,000 medals, held three world fitness records for her age group, was once voted among the top 10 fittest women in North America, and accomplished most of this after beating cancer of the breast, bone, and lung."

You mentioned Nalakrat's molasses and baking soda "fix". One of my aunts had breast cancer, both breasts. She had surgery, double mastectomy in maybe, 1964. She never had radiation or chemo. In maybe 2006 while having a phone conversation with her she divulged a little info. She had gas! She said that she would have to take some baking soda. She told me she did that almost daily. She never had recurrence. She died at the age of 99 in 2014 as the oldest in her town. She was not only self sufficient until she was 97 but did for others! At family gatherings she would prepare and bring several dishes. Did the baking soda prevent recurrence? Who knows? Would such a thing destroy cancer? If it did I don't think radiation and chemo would have ever come into existence. Will it prevent cancer? Very possible. For everyone? No! I don't think so. A combination of things might be what is needed. Different for everyone.

I do a baking soda thing once a day but differently. I use "Dynamic Health's, Tart Cherry, Turmeric and Ginger Tonic" rather than molasses. Rather than just the sugar in molasses to accompany the baking soda the tonic has more cancer fighting ability.

Don't give up on your diet and supplements. They may prevent or slow recurrence. Notice I didn't say a cure.

Try to keep your spirits up. At times it isn't easy. Vent on HU if you need to. Some of us will read it and get back to you.

When is a Harvoni type of pill coming? President Jimmy Carter beat the odds with immune therapy. If he stays on his feet and stops falling we'll have him for a few more years, maybe longer than anyone would have ever predicted.
