Incontinence after prostatectomy

I've tried myriad pads and diapers and the designs and fabric all cause awful chafing and irritation at the tip of penis. Anyone have a product or solution? Tks.

Perhaps if you wear tighter briefs, the movements will be less. I had RP and was on diapers for a while myself.

After my RP I had terrible chafing and bright red rash all over inner thighs and scrotum. My primary care physician wrote me a script for “Clotrimazole - Betamethasone” a cream and it was gone in 2 days.

Hope this helps

Depending upon how much of an incontinence issue you have, incontinence briefs may work. They are real cotton briefs with an extra large amount of fabric in the front to absorb leakage. I found them on Amazon. They worked for me as I transitioned from Depends back to my ordinary underwear. (Make sure you are doing your incontinence exercises, too. They work!)

Hope this helps! Good luck!

I talked one person who said his leakage was such that they inserted a battery operated valve. When he had to go he pushed a button and when done he pushed it again and it closed off the urethra. He found it quite satisfactory.

Thanks Gents. Got you. Here's the issue. The chafing is on the head of the penis and only gets worse from damp nylon/ fabrics rubbing. I've tried virtually all the stuff from local CVS and from Amazon. One cotton and NON disposable from Active50 seems like it might be better

Anyone got thoughts on dealing with this especially when walking rather than being still? Seems that movement actually stimulates urination.

Tks

I have no personal experience with them but a Google search for "penis clamp for incontinence" brought up a lot of choices. I don't think they rub the end of the penis or hold any urine outside the body. Some men seem to do well with them and some don't. I suspect it takes some practice to get the clamp on right, get it off at the right time, and get used to it.

I too have incontinence after my 2012 RP. Perhaps I didn’t do enough kegel exercises. Alcohol or vigorous walking/exercise cause me to use more than one pad per day. On vacations I will combine a pad and Depends underwear.

Anyway, for the rash my doctor prescribed a generic ointment called “triamcinolone acetonide cream.” Works well. Best wishes!

I use Prevail pads in my disposable brief (trying not to say diaper) 7 months works pretty well, just ease into standing up if you are completely incontinent like I am. Stand up quick and urine comes out faster than it can be absorbed. I found a pretty cool pair of underwear with a rubber appliance connected to a bag by Afex. A little spendie but it works. Hope this helps.

I use penile clamps to control the incontinence. But shouldn't be worn for long hours. The clamp has to be released at reasonable intervals. I am using it for the past three years. Works well for me.

Easy helper is a dab of triple antibiotic ointment (NOT cream, you have to have a Vaseline moisture barrier). I did well with the Willow incontinence brief and LOTS OF pelvic floor exercises. If the moisture is causing a fungal infection, the steroid creams will control it.

I was having bleeding from the foreskin area due to the damp pads. My uro suggested Desitin cream and it cleared up in a week. The clotrimizole alone was not enough.

I use Costco and rinse my penis lots with water. I did use zincofax cream once, It worked.

Hi, I like Tena brand pads (not all sizes/degrees of absorbency on Amazon and sometimes overpriced there, but available from the company website), close fitting but elastic underwear (I like RBX) and for irritation, which occurs sometimes with long walks/hikes, I use A+D diaper rash ointment--works for babies and works for me.

Hey JJ,

Had and still have the problem from a prostatectomy in 2009. I use feminine napkins. Always Infinity. I cut off the side wings and just stick them in my underwear. If I get chaffing I just use A&D ointment. I've been using that for Jock itch since Jr. High School and it always does the trick right away. In fact while raising our sons we used A&D instead of Desitin, or anything else and the boys never had a rash last more than a day.

This is a simple fix and about as inexpensive as you can get!

I suffered fir a few years after RP and radiotherapy the solution for me was to have an artificial urinary sphincter surgical implant. This gives back full control or urine flow it’s been life changing fo me! Now able to enjoy the active lifestyle I have always had. Ask your oncologist for info and advice

Meanwhile, Kegels 3X a day. Clinch 10 seconds, rest for 10 seconds for a set of ten. Works very well for many. Pads and the like are necessary for a while but don't become dependent on them or you will never progress. A PT can tell if you are doing it right. Fight on my friend. Persist!

I use depends guards in my briefs and have no trouble with them. I just got a package of generic ones because the depends ones were sold out. I hope they're as good.

Hello I have had a super pubic catheter inserted into my bladder in 2005 I had the procedure done privately & every 10 to 12 weeks I have the super pubic catheter replaced at my local community hospital the reason I’m mentioning this catheter is that you won’t dribble etc as the urine goes directly into a leg bag as the super pubic catheter goes into the bladder wall 5 inches below the belly button & you can change the leg bags for new ones every 3 days to keep infections at bay
