Soy consumption and prostate cancer

One hears mixed messages about soy consumption and prostate cancer, with some saying it is bad and others saying it is good. Here is a link to info advocating for soy consumption by those with either breast or prostate cancer. FYI, it presents arguments for why those that opposed soy consumption by prostate cancer patients "got it wrong".

"This study revealed that dietary intake of isoflavones was associated with an elevated risk of advanced prostate cancer."

A small randomized clinical trial found: "Daily consumption of a beverage powder supplement containing soy protein isolate for 2 years following radical prostatectomy did not reduce biochemical recurrence of prostate cancer in men at high risk of PSA failure."

"some saying it is bad and others saying it is good"

You forgot to include those who say it is both!

I'm not going to dig out all the papers that report a biphasic effect for genistein - just this one:

"Although genistein has many potentially therapeutic actions against cancer, its biphasic bioactivity (inhibitory at high concentrations and activating at low concentrations) requires caution in determining therapeutic doses of genistein alone or in combination with chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and/or immunotherapies."

Only anecdotal, but for what it’s worth, I’ve been using estradiol patches per Dr. Myers for about 4 years now for relief of ADT SE’s. At one point I was on a very high dose over and above the typical 2 patches per week dose in an effort to heal areas where bone mets were in an attempt to reach durable long term remission. I am still on the prescribed dose of 2 patches per week. I drink 8 oz. or more of soy milk in my coffee daily since I don’t use milk any more, been doing this for about 5 years.

PSA remains undetectable and other bloodwork is in normal ranges. My current PCa specialist - Dr. Sartor has no problem with estradiol patches.

OK so I am on high dose Estrogen patches my Estradiol is high, testosterone is <.1 and PSA has decresed from 12 to currently .011. Estrogen/estradial appears to be completly blocking testosterone from all sources and to be effective in reducing and managing the systemic PC following radiation of prostate bed and lower abdominal lymph nodes.

Also I have completly replaced cows milk with soya milk and chick pea curries are part of my regular diet

Doesn't seem to fit with the theory.

I too am in this camp. Been taking the food and supplements and food foe 18 yrs. One research scientist at Roswell hosp. Thinks genistine may be beneficial. Make your choice with caution as suggested. Good luck. Rocco

After my wife had her breast cancer surgery we eliminated soy products from her diet as it is a natural estrogen. Have you tried to eliminate soy? That stuff is in everything! She's been cancer-free for ten years now and the scar from her lumpectomy is barely visible.

Ten years cancer free. I salute her.. That’s great,
