PSA 1550

My dad is 91 years old and his psa has been slowly rising for about 8 years. Just recently he was having pain in his hip and his psa is now 1550. It was 60 in June of 2018. CT scan is clear of organ involvement. Bone scan shows mets to hips and femurs. Doctor put him on Lupron a few days ago. He has no appetite for the last three months. Will the Lupron help with the lack of appetite as well as control his pain. He is otherwise very healthy and lives alone just fine.

My guess is that his loss of appetite is from the cancer, it's common. I was losing my appetite before I started treatment too. Most likely, the Lupron will make a dramatic reduction in his PSA and pain and I would also expect his appetite to return. I gained 20 pounds after starting Lupron. A good response is very typical so just give it a few weeks.

I had a PSA of 463, losing weight and in a whole lot of pain. 3 weeks after my first Lupron shot, my PSA was 12 and pain was pretty much gone. It's amazingly effective in something like 90% of cases.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Thank you so much. I appreciate your quick response and tender words of encouragement. Even though he is 91 I'm not ready to give up just yet. Thanks again.

Glad to be able to help. I started noticing improvement near the end of the first week so hopefully he'll start feeling better soon.

The Lupron should help with the pain. If he gets pain relief, he might eat better.

Lupron dropped my PSA by 90% in 6 weeks. Great way to start treatment, but may cause loss of strength, let him eat anything he wants for now. Steak and potato breakfast is fine. Pain should lessen and appetite should increase.
