I wanted to update the group about my dad. He has been admitted for an Enterococcus Vancomycin resistant infection. They are treating him with IV antibiotics. The last ct showed no cancer in his lymph nodes and tumor shrinkage in the bones. The oncologist said his cancer treatments are working so that’s good news. It’s these infections that are the struggle. It’s been a tough winter. Thank you for all of the encouragement from everyone on this forum. It’s been a source of strength for us.

The news about his cancer is positive....congratulations....where is the VRE infection ??
Uti and lungs
antibiotics kill good and bad bacteria...watch that he does not complain of mouth discomfort, white patches in mouth--thrush, or develops diarrhea--possible clostridium difficile enterocolitis---avoid this by having him eat activia yogurts several hours after antibiotics...this keeps his good bacteria levels up...if he doesn't like that--get him florastor or a probiotic to take several hours after antibiotics....your choice...best of luck...

Unfortunately "People who stay in a hospital have the highest odds of getting VRE. That’s partly because infections that don’t respond to antibiotics spread most easily in places where the drugs are used most often". Hope he gets well... I had my share of UTI's, they're nothing to sneeze at (mind the silly pun). I used to take Cipro for my infections. It worked.
Take care and keep and eye on him fooling with the pretty nurses....
Good Luck, Good Health and Good Humor.

Is he on linezolid? Daptomycin is a good drug for VRE but does not penetrate into the lung very well. Linezolid is also good and does penetrate. Very few antibiotics work against enterococcus faecium. Hopefully a good infectious disease physician is managing his case.
